Chapter 17

Five years after I walked into Castellano Club wearing a worn coat and old cap, I did it again.

Not the disguise.

The club.

Maeve was nine.

Arthur now supplied desserts for our anniversary dinner.

Dominic coordinated deliveries.

No brass manager badge anywhere.

The old freestanding Castellano emblem had been repaired and mounted properly to the wall.

Harder to crash through.

Wise.

Maeve found me near the lobby desk.

She held out her hand.

“Remember?”

A coin.

Not the same one.

Probably.

Children enjoy continuity more than accuracy.

I reached into my watch pocket.

The original coin was still there.

I placed it beside hers.

Her eyes widened.

“You kept it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I thought about the answer.

Because it reminded me of Dominic.

Too negative.

Because it reminded me of hunger.

Too painful.

Because it reminded me of generosity.

Closer.

“You gave away something you needed because you thought somebody else needed it more.”

Maeve shrugged.

“I was four.”

As though that explained everything.

Maybe it did.

Then she pointed toward the dining room.

“Dad says dessert is ready.”

We walked together.

At the entrance, Dominic stood checking vendor receipts.

He looked up.

Maeve waved.

He waved back.

No fear.

No false authority.

No child kneeling on marble collecting coins an adult had scattered.

Five years earlier Dominic told me street trash did not eat inside his club.

That sentence had contained every mistake.

He thought the club was his.

He thought belonging came from appearance.

He thought authority meant deciding who deserved comfort.

And he thought generosity from someone poor was worth less than contempt from someone powerful.

Maeve had understood the opposite before any of us.

She had been hungry.

She still shared.

I had been wealthy.

I had failed to notice who wasn’t eating.

That was why I kept the coin.

May you like

Not because it was her last dollar.

Because for one humiliating moment, it proved a four-year-old understood my club better than its owner did.
