Chapter 3 - THE WORDS DOMINIC KEPT

Rocco moved first.
His hand closed around Dominic’s collar.
Not a punch.
Not yet.
Dominic hit the bakery wall hard enough to shake a framed menu.
Hannah stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Rocco looked at her.
She was crying.
Still steady.
“If you hit him now, we lose whatever he hasn’t said.”
Rocco released Dominic.
That was the difference between the man he had been at thirty and the man standing here at fifty-five.
Not softness.
Control with a purpose.
Dominic adjusted his shirt.
He did not complain.
Rocco pointed toward the chair again.
“Sit down.”
Dominic obeyed.
The hospital had been chaos.
Rocco arrived twenty minutes after Gabriel.
Doctors kept him outside.
Dominic had blood on his hands and Gabriel’s rain-soaked jacket around his shoulders.
Rocco remembered seeing him.
He remembered Dominic saying:
“He never woke up.”
A lie.
Gabriel regained consciousness for less than five minutes.
Dominic was still in the room because a nurse had not yet removed him.
Gabriel looked confused at first.
Then recognized him.
He asked:
“Did you tell Hannah?”
Dominic said no.
Gabriel whispered:
“Good.”
Then:
“Don’t tell Dad about the baby yet.”
Dominic asked why.
Gabriel answered:
“Because he’ll love it like a Bellini before he learns to love it like a child.”
Rocco closed his eyes.
The sentence cut exactly because it sounded like his son.
Gabriel was not accusing Rocco of being incapable of love.
He was afraid Rocco would wrap love in identity.
Name.
Expectation.
Duty.
The same things Gabriel had spent years resisting.
“What else?” Hannah asked.
Dominic looked toward her.
Gabriel told him the relationship with Hannah had never been temporary.
He intended to marry her.
He intended to tell Rocco.
He was done hiding.
Then Gabriel said something Dominic never repeated.
“I’m sorry I’m leaving you with him.”
Rocco looked up.
Dominic stared at the floor.
“He meant you.”
Rocco did not react.
Dominic continued.
Gabriel knew Dominic had spent his entire life trying to earn Rocco’s approval.
When Gabriel resisted Rocco, Dominic stepped closer.
When Gabriel skipped family dinners, Dominic volunteered for more work.
When Gabriel challenged old traditions, Dominic defended them.
Not because Dominic loved them all.
Because somebody had to become the son who stayed.
Rocco felt the words settle inside him.
“What did Gabriel tell you?”
Dominic’s voice lowered.
“He said I didn’t have to stay either.”
Silence.
“He said I could walk away.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“I hated him for saying it.”
“Why?”
“Because if I could leave, then staying was my choice.”
There was the wound.
Dominic had built his identity around sacrifice.
Gabriel threatened that identity by showing another life was possible.
Hannah wiped her face.
“Did Gabriel blame you for the crash?”
Dominic stopped.
Rocco noticed.
“Answer.”
Dominic said:
“No.”
Hannah looked surprised.
Dominic had expected fury.
Gabriel gave him something worse.
Understanding.
He said:
“You lied because you were scared.”
Dominic tried to deny it.
Gabriel squeezed his hand.
“You’re scared I’m leaving you here alone.”
Dominic started crying beside the hospital bed.
He had not cried in years.
Gabriel whispered:
“Don’t make Hannah pay for that.”
Dominic looked toward the staircase.
Maeve was somewhere above them.
The promise had followed him for years.
He kept her paternity hidden.
He kept Bellini relatives away.
He stopped rumors whenever someone mentioned how much Maeve resembled Gabriel.
But something inside him hardened every time he saw Hannah.
Every time he saw the bakery.
Every time Maeve grew another inch.
Gabriel was gone.
They remained.
That resentment became small acts first.
Cancelled dinners.
Shorter bakery orders.
Cold greetings.
Then insults.
Then today.
Rocco looked at him.
“You broke the promise.”
“Yes.”
“Not when you told me.”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
“When you decided she was small enough to humiliate.”
Dominic looked down.
“Yes.”
Hannah remained silent.
Rocco asked:
“Why lie about Gabriel waking up?”
Dominic answered immediately.
“Because of what he said next.”
Rocco waited.
Gabriel asked Dominic to bring Rocco into the room.
Dominic refused.
He told Gabriel doctors said it was too late.
That was not true.
Rocco was fifteen feet away.
Hannah stared.
“Why?”
Dominic’s face tightened.
“Because Gabriel was going to tell him everything.”
Rocco stepped closer.
“Everything about what?”
Dominic looked directly at him.
“About the fight before he left.”
Rocco frowned.
“I remember the fight.”
“No.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You remember the part you were there for.”
There had been another argument.
After Gabriel left the dining room.
Dominic followed him into the garage.
Gabriel said he was going to Hannah.
Dominic told him Rocco would never accept it.
Gabriel said:
“You don’t know him as well as you think.”
Dominic answered:
“I know him better than you do.”
Then Dominic lied.
Again.
He told Gabriel Rocco had once said he would rather lose his son than watch him throw away the Bellini name.
Rocco’s face changed.
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
Hannah looked sick.
Dominic had put those words into Rocco’s mouth.
Gabriel believed them.
Not fully.
Enough.
That was why he left the dinner angry enough to refuse Rocco’s calls.
That was why Dominic could not let father and son speak at the hospital.
If Gabriel told Rocco about the sentence, Dominic’s lie would be exposed while Gabriel was still alive.
“So you kept me outside.”
Dominic’s voice cracked.
“Yes.”
Rocco stared at him.
“How long?”
“Four minutes.”
Four minutes.
Not enough to know whether anything would have changed.
Enough to haunt a lifetime.
Dominic looked up.
“I thought he would recover.”
Hannah shook her head slowly.
“You cared more about being caught than giving a father four minutes with his son.”
Dominic could not answer.
Then a small voice came from the staircase.
“Mr. Rocco?”
All three adults turned.
Maeve stood on the bottom step.
Still wearing Rocco’s jacket.
She held something in both hands.
A small wooden box.
“Mommy keeps this under her bed.”
Hannah went pale.
“Maeve.”
The child looked confused.
“It has Daddy’s voice.”
Dominic stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
Rocco stared at Hannah.
“You have his voice?”
Hannah looked at Dominic.
Then at Rocco.
Her face changed.
“Yes.”
Dominic whispered:
“No.”
May you like
Hannah held his gaze.
“You weren’t the only person Gabriel called that night.”
