Chapter 4

The atmosphere in the bookbinding salon turned to solid ice. The vibrant, bright colors of the room seemed to sharpen in contrast to the dark, suffocating tension radiating from the veteran Mafia boss. Marciano stood perfectly still, his tailored three-piece suit an armor of absolute authority. He stared down at Harlan, his cold eyes dissecting the man before him.
“You came to my sister’s birthday celebration,” Marciano said, measuring every single syllable with chilling precision. “With another woman’s lipstick on your neck.”
Harlan’s fair face flushed a dark, angry red. He was backed into a corner, completely exposed in front of the most powerful capos in the city. Driven by a blind, irrational cocktail of pride and adrenaline, Harlan decided to double down on his arrogance.
“I told you, it was business,” Harlan spat, puffing out his chest to try and match Marciano’s imposing height. He took an aggressive step forward, closing the distance between them until they were mere inches apart.
“Business,” Marciano murmured, entirely unfazed by the posturing.
“Yes, business,” Harlan insisted, his voice rising in volume as he desperately tried to project dominance. “And what happens between me and my wife is our concern. You might run the D’Angelo family, Marciano, but you don't run my house. She belongs to me.”
With a sudden, violent motion, Harlan reached out and grabbed Marciano firmly by the shoulder. His fingers dug aggressively into the expensive fabric of the tailored suit jacket.
A collective, silent gasp rippled through the gathered bodyguards and family members. To lay hands on the Don in anger was an act of pure, suicidal treason.
“Stay out of my marriage,” Harlan growled angrily, trying to shove the older man backward.
Marciano did not move a single inch. His polished leather shoes remained anchored to the hardwood floor. He looked down at the hand resting on his shoulder, and then he slowly raised his eyes back to Harlan’s flushed, sweating face.
“You put a ring on her finger,” Marciano whispered, his voice dropping to a volume so low and lethal it forced Harlan to lean in to hear him. “But she will always be D’Angelo blood. And you have just soiled it.”

“I said back off!” Harlan shouted, his panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade as he realized the Mafia boss was not going to back down.
Harlan made the final, fatal mistake of his miserable life. Believing a preemptive strike was his only remaining option, he let go of Marciano’s shoulder, pulled his right arm back, and swung a heavy, desperate punch aimed directly at Marciano’s jaw.
