Chapter 11

Henry didn't run.

Men his age rarely do.

He sat down.

Asked for water.

Then looked at me like we were about to discuss weather.

“Why?”

He took one sip.

“Your father.”

“What about him?”

“He closed the old chamber.”

“And?”

“He shouldn't have.”

I stared.

“What is inside?”

Henry smiled.

“Nothing you would value.”

Wrong answer.

“Try again.”

“History.”

Marcus laughed.

“Money?”

Henry looked at him with contempt.

“That is why Vale used you.”

Marcus's face hardened.

Henry continued.

“You hear tunnel and think cargo.”

Then Isabella.

“You hear William and think marriage.”

Her jaw tightened.

Then me.

“You hear Charlotte and think child.”

I stared.

“She is.”

Henry smiled.

“Yes.”

“Then say what Vale thinks.”

Henry sighed.

“Sterling blood opens the old chamber.”

Not magic.

Tradition.

Mechanism.

An old biometric? Too modern. Family signet plus family member? Could be physical ring and phrase? Need mafia feel, not fantasy. He explained:

“Two locks.”

He pointed at my signet.

“One requires the Sterling seal.”

Then toward the stairs.

“The other is a pressure latch inside the narrow side passage. Only someone small can reach it without dismantling the wall.”

My blood went cold.

Charlotte.

A child.

My father sealed it because the mechanism itself encouraged using children in dangerous spaces.

I stared.

“Vale wanted Charlotte inside the wall.”

Henry nodded.

Silence.

Isabella stopped breathing.

She hadn't known.

I turned toward her.

“You put my daughter exactly where Vale needed her.”

“No.”

Her voice came thin.

“I didn't know.”

Henry laughed.

“Of course not.”

Marcus stood.

“You old bastard.”

Henry smiled.

“You opened the route.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“You fed us to him.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

At least Henry admitted it.

I looked at him.

“What is in the chamber?”

He stared.

“Names.”

My jaw tightened.

“Whose?”

“Every old alliance your father buried.”

Not papers, necessarily. Could be carved markers, relics, family seals. Henry continued:

“Tokens. Rings. Oaths recorded on wax cylinders. Things old men still consider binding.”

Mafia history.

Leverage.

Not courts.

Not police.

Control over old factions.

Vale wanted it to rebuild a coalition my father dismantled.

I almost laughed.

All this.

For dead men's promises.

Henry saw my expression.

“You don't understand their value.”

“No.”

I looked upstairs.

“I understand the cost.”

Henry's smile faded.

Good.

I turned to Isabella.

“How long was Charlotte inside?”

She said nothing.

“Answer.”

“Two hours.”

“Did anyone come through the passage?”

Her face changed.

I noticed.

“Who?”

She swallowed.

“A man.”

“Silver wolf ring?”

“Yes.”

“Grant Vale?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Henry smiled.

“She does.”

Isabella turned.

He continued.

“Grant's son.”

My chest tightened.

“Adrian Vale?”

Henry nodded.

Thirty-three.

Violent.

Impatient.

Much less subtle than his father.

“What did he do?”

Isabella stared at the floor.

“Asked Charlotte to reach something.”

My entire body went cold.

“You let him use her.”

“No.”

“Did you stop him?”

Silence.

“Did you?”

“He didn't hurt her.”

That sentence.

Always.

As if not hurting someone excused terror.

I stepped closer.

“What did he make her do?”

Isabella's voice dropped.

“Put her arm through a slot.”

I felt sick.

“To reach the inner latch.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Too frightened.”

Isabella rolled her eyes.

Even now.

“She kept crying for you.”

I stared.

“And what did you tell her?”

Her face hardened.

“You weren't coming.”

Silence.

Henry looked almost amused.

I turned toward him.

“You knew this was happening tonight?”

He sipped water.

“Yes.”

Marcus swore.

I looked at Henry.

“You let a three-year-old be put inside a wall.”

His expression barely moved.

“She would have been released once the chamber opened.”

There.

Another monster.

Different style.

Same belief.

People are tools.

Children too.

I stepped closer.

“You thought she was acceptable collateral.”

“No.”

Henry smiled.

“I thought she was Sterling.”

My hands curled.

As if the name obligated a child to suffer.

Then footsteps sounded from the hidden passage.

Every bodyguard moved.

Henry's smile returned.

“Too late.”

I turned toward the opening.

A man emerged from the dark.

Silver wolf ring.

Adrian Vale.

May you like

And in his hand—

he held the second half of the hidden-room mechanism.
