Chapter 11

The council gathered at the old Romano banquet hall.

Thirty-two men.

Nine women.

Captains.

Senior cousins.

Family allies.

No children.

Dante insisted.

Michael had wanted the family’s next generation visible.

Dante refused.

Leo and Mia would not become props in an adult succession fight.

Michael arrived last.

He wore a dark suit.

No weapon visible.

No bodyguards.

Again, confidence built from knowing the room.

Dante stood at the center.

Mateo remained near the back.

Many people had not recognized him yet.

Javier stood beside Clara.

Sebastian sat.

Teresa remained near him.

Dante spoke first.

“Michael called this council in my name.”

Murmurs.

Michael smiled.

Dante continued.

“I allowed it.”

The murmurs stopped.

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

Then Dante said:

“Before he explains why he thinks I should no longer lead, I’ll save him time.”

Michael’s expression changed.

Dante told them.

Mateo was not proven traitor.

Salvatore had manipulated his own son.

Dominic helped.

Sebastian and Mateo planned to leave.

Mateo was exiled.

Dante searched seven months.

Stopped.

A choice he regretted.

Then:

“Mateo is alive.”

The room exploded in whispers.

Mateo stepped forward.

Men stood.

Some crossed themselves.

One laughed in disbelief.

Javier watched his father become a ghost in public.

Dante continued.

“Javier knew he might be alive three months ago.”

Javier’s face tightened.

Dante looked at him.

His turn.

Javier stepped forward.

“I let resentment make me useful to someone who wanted this family divided.”

Silence.

He continued.

“I spoke against Leo.”

Dante watched.

Javier’s voice shook.

“And at the barbecue, I put my hands on him.”

Some men looked disgusted.

Good.

No shielding.

“I told myself I was challenging Dante.”

A pause.

“I hurt a child because I was angry at his father.”

Clara’s eyes stayed on him.

“That is mine.”

Michael looked disappointed.

His reveal was gone.

Dante turned to him.

“What else?”

Michael smiled slowly.

“You think confession is power.”

“No.”

“Then?”

“It’s harder to blackmail people with what they admit.”

A few men laughed.

Not Michael.

He walked toward the center.

“Fine.”

He looked around.

“The Romanos have spent generations telling you blood makes authority.”

“Yes.”

“No?”

Several men nodded uncertainly.

Michael continued.

“Mateo was removed because Salvatore preferred Dante.”

Dante corrected.

“Unclear.”

Michael looked at him.

“Still hiding.”

“No.”

Dante’s voice remained calm.

“You want certainty where there isn’t any because certainty recruits better.”

The room reacted.

Michael’s face cooled.

He continued.

“Dante inherited because of birth.”

“Yes.”

“Javier expected influence because of birth.”

Javier answered:

“Yes.”

“Mateo was supposed to inherit because of birth.”

Mateo said:

“Yes.”

Michael spread his hands.

“And you call this strength?”

Dante looked around.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Michael too.

Dante continued.

“He’s right about one thing.”

Michael did not like that.

“Our family has treated birth like proof.”

Dante looked toward his captains.

“It isn’t.”

A murmur.

Javier stared.

Mateo almost smiled.

Dante continued.

“Neither is a secret council.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“Neither is a man who uses children as pressure.”

Michael said:

“I never touched Leo.”

“No.”

Dante looked at Javier.

“You found someone who would.”

Silence.

Michael’s expression changed.

That was the point.

Command did not need direct contact.

He fed Javier resentment.

Created the environment.

Javier chose the act.

Both owned different pieces.

Michael stepped closer.

“You want these people to believe you’ve become enlightened overnight?”

“No.”

Dante almost smiled.

“I want them to watch what I do next.”

“What?”

Dante turned toward Mateo.

“The chair.”

Mateo frowned.

Dante looked back.

“My position.”

The room went silent.

“I am not giving it to Mateo.”

Michael smiled.

“Afraid?”

“No.”

“I’m not giving it to Leo.”

More silence.

“I’m not naming anyone today.”

The old family reacted immediately.

No successor?

Dangerous.

Uncomfortable.

That discomfort was exactly what Dante wanted.

“The next leader will not inherit because I love him.”

His eyes moved toward Javier.

“Or because an old man feared him.”

Then Michael.

“Or because someone manipulated the room.”

Michael’s face darkened.

Dante continued:

“If I die tomorrow, the council chooses.”

Michael laughed.

“There.”

“You become democratic?”

“No.”

Dante’s voice stayed cold.

“Don’t romanticize it.”

“This is still a mafia family.”

“Strength matters.”

“Judgment matters.”

“Loyalty matters.”

“But blood alone stops deciding.”

Michael’s entire argument had depended on the Romanos defending blood.

Dante removed it.

Now Michael needed another reason to replace him.

He smiled slowly.

“Then maybe we agree.”

“No.”

Dante stared.

“You believe people are pieces.”

Michael’s smile faded.

“I’m trying to stop that.”

Then Mateo spoke from behind.

“No, Dante.”

Everyone turned.

Mateo walked forward.

“He doesn’t want your chair.”

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

Mateo looked at him.

“He wants Salvatore’s room.”

Dante frowned.

“What room?”

Mateo’s expression darkened.

“The one under this hall.”

Silence.

Dante had never known.

Of course.

Michael looked toward the floor.

For the first time, real fear.

Mateo continued.

“Dominic told me before I left.”

“There is one final room beneath the old banquet hall.”

“Not chess pieces.”

“Not memories.”

“People.”

Dante stared.

“What people?”

Mateo looked around.

“Names of every Romano who was secretly marked for removal but never killed.”

The room changed.

Old disappearances.

Dead men who might not be dead.

Exiles.

Hidden heirs.

Michael wanted the room because opening it could destroy half the alliances in the city.

Dante looked at him.

“So this was never about leadership.”

Michael’s voice became cold.

“It was about ending lies.”

“No.”

May you like

Mateo answered.

“It was about owning them.”
