Chapter 9

I called the estate.
No answer from Helena.
Then Elias reached one of the guards.
“Move everyone out of the lower east wing.”
My voice didn't sound like mine.
“Now.”
Matteo watched me.
Smiling.
I wanted to kill him.
Later.
First family.
Always family.
The guard came back on.
“Boss, Helena won't move.”
“Why?”
Pause.
“She says she knows.”
Of course she did.
I looked at Matteo.
“What is it?”
He said nothing.
I grabbed his collar.
“What?”
Noah stood behind Elias.
Watching.
I released Matteo.
Not in front of my son.
That mattered.
I looked at the transmitter.
Single-button remote.
No timer.
Manual.
Meaning the device at the estate hadn't been activated.
Yet.
“Where?”
Matteo smiled.
“Hidden room.”
The basement room.
The planted crates.
Not all guns.
One box was something else.
I radioed the estate.
“Do not open anything.”
Helena's voice came through.
She had taken the radio.
“Angelo.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did you do?”
She cried.
“I didn't know.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I thought the crate was weapons.”
“Which one?”
“Black case. Back wall.”
“Who brought it?”
“Matteo.”
There.
My brother had never trusted Helena either.
Of course not.
Everybody was expendable except himself.
“Leave the basement.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
Silence.
Then I understood.
“Dominic?”
“He's inside.”
I looked at Matteo.
His smile disappeared slightly.
He hadn't expected that.
Interesting.
“Why is Dominic inside?”
Helena cried harder.
“He went back for the Varela markings.”
Of course.
Evidence.
Always one last stupid attempt to protect the story.
“Get him out.”
“The inner door locked.”
I looked at Matteo.
“You locked it remotely?”
He said nothing.
I held up the trigger.
“One press?”
Still nothing.
Noah stepped forward.
“Dad.”
I looked at him.
“His watch.”
Matteo's wrist.
A second device.
Tiny control on the side.
My son had seen it.
I ripped the watch off.
Matteo lunged.
Elias pinned him.
The watch screen showed two icons.
LOCK.
OPEN.
I pressed OPEN.
Helena screamed through the radio.
“It's open!”
“Get Dominic out.”
Seconds.
Long seconds.
Then:
“We're clear.”
I exhaled.
“Move everyone upstairs.”
“What about the case?”
“Leave it.”
I looked at Matteo.
His face had changed.
Not afraid.
Angry.
Because the plan failed.
Not because his cousin almost died.
That told Dominic everything too, once he heard.
Good.
Sometimes betrayal only becomes visible when someone discovers how disposable they were.
We returned to the hospital atrium.
Helena and Dominic were brought in later.
Same place where Lily had arrived carrying Noah.
That felt right.
Emma stood with Lily near the elevators.
Noah beside me.
Matteo entered in restraints between two men.
Helena saw him.
For one second, her face became the face of a woman who had spent eleven years protecting a ghost.
Then Matteo looked past her.
No warmth.
No gratitude.
Nothing.
“Matteo…”
He didn't answer.
Dominic stared at him.
“You locked me in.”
Matteo shrugged.
“You failed.”
Dominic's entire face changed.
Years of loyalty died quietly.
Helena whispered:
“We did everything for you.”
Matteo laughed.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You did everything because you hated that Angelo won.”
That was cruel.
Also true.
Helena sat down.
I looked at Dominic.
“You hit my son.”
He said nothing.
“You imprisoned Emma.”
Silence.
“You helped terrorize Lily.”
His eyes moved toward the little girl.
For the first time, shame.
Late.
Still useful.
I looked at Helena.
“You struck an eight-year-old because she recognized your secret.”
Tears ran down her face.
“Yes.”
“And when she came here carrying Noah, you tried to hit her again.”
Helena closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
I looked at Matteo.
“You tried to start a war.”
He smiled.
“Still might.”
“No.”
“Varela won't believe you.”
“They don't have to.”
He frowned.
“Victor Sanz already knows.”
That got him.
I had sent word while he sat in the tunnel.
Not paperwork.
Not evidence packets.
One conversation.
One old enemy speaking directly to another.
The way our world actually worked.
Victor knew the meeting had been compromised.
Varela knew someone had been using their markings.
Both families now knew Matteo was alive.
No war.
Only him.
His smile disappeared.
Good.
I looked at everyone.
“My son nearly died because three adults decided power mattered more than children.”
Nobody spoke.
I pointed toward Lily.
“That girl carried him here while the rest of you tried to protect yourselves.”
Silence.
Then Noah stepped beside her.
He looked at Helena.
“You called her a maid's brat.”
Helena lowered her eyes.
Noah continued.
“She saved my life.”
I looked at my son.
Pride is dangerous.
That moment, I allowed it.
Then Lily looked at me.
“Mr. Angelo?”
“Yes?”
“Can Mom come home?”
I looked at Emma.
Her face tightened.
Home.
She still called my estate home after what happened there.
I understood what Lily meant.
Not the mansion.
Her mother.
Safe.
Together.
I crouched.
“Yes.”
Lily nodded.
Then looked toward Helena.
“And she can't touch us?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
I looked at my aunt.
Then Dominic.
Then Matteo.
May you like
“Ever.”
For the first time since Lily entered that hospital barefoot, her shoulders relaxed.
