Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE AINSLEY ALMOST SAVED

Ainsley had once tried to help.

That was the complication nobody expected.

Months before Serena died, before jealousy hardened into something uglier, Ainsley helped Serena prepare the house.

She chose curtains.

Built the bookshelf with Michael.

Carried Eira around while Serena painted.

For a while, Ainsley genuinely wanted Serena and Galen to leave the estate.

Why?

Because Claire had once told her something.

“People who love powerful families sometimes need walls the family doesn’t own.”

Ainsley understood.

She wanted Serena to have those walls.

Then something changed.

Serena told Ainsley that leaving the estate might finally repair her marriage.

Galen might become more present.

They might have another child someday.

Ainsley felt the old envy return.

She saw the house no longer as Serena’s escape.

She saw it as proof Serena was taking Galen somewhere Ainsley could not follow.

That was when she told Michael Galen would never agree.

Then told Galen Serena was planning to leave.

Then encouraged every misunderstanding.

Ainsley stood inside Eira’s half-finished bedroom.

“I helped build the thing I later tried to destroy.”

Galen looked toward the small bookshelf.

“Yes.”

Ainsley expected anger.

He gave her truth.

The difference mattered.

Then Eira found a painted wooden box beneath the bed.

Inside were several small objects.

A ribbon.

A baby tooth container still empty.

A photograph of Galen asleep with newborn Eira on his chest.

And another recorder.

Serena again.

Galen pressed play.

“If we’re in this house when you hear this, I hope that means Galen finally listened.”

Michael smiled sadly.

Serena sounded healthier.

Months before her death.

She talked about the house.

About wanting Eira to know family could visit without owning the room.

Then her voice became serious.

“Ainsley helped me here.”

Ainsley closed her eyes.

“She is not a villain.”

A pause.

“But she is hurting.”

Serena explained Claire.

Ainsley’s fear.

The way she turned abandonment into control.

Then Serena said something Galen had not expected.

“And Galen is not innocent.”

His face tightened.

“If he ever hears this and starts making Ainsley the only reason our marriage suffered, stop him.”

Michael looked toward his brother.

Serena continued.

“Galen loves like a fortress.”

“He protects.”

“He provides.”

“He stands between danger and everyone he loves.”

A pause.

“But sometimes he stands there so long nobody can reach each other.”

Galen looked down.

Serena had asked him to move.

He kept hearing rejection.

She asked for fewer family dinners.

He heard disrespect.

She asked him to send guards farther from Eira.

He heard risk.

He loved her.

He also treated his fear as objective reality.

Ainsley exploited that.

But she did not invent it.

Galen sat on Eira’s small bed.

The truth was harder when there was enough blame for everyone.

Then Serena addressed Eira.

“My baby, if you ever hear this when you’re older, know one thing.”

Eira looked at the recorder as if her mother might appear.

“You never have to love me by keeping every object I touched.”

“You can lose a dress.”

“Break a picture.”

“Forget my perfume.”

“You can even forget my voice.”

Ainsley started crying again.

Serena continued.

“Love is not storage.”

Galen looked toward the locket around Eira’s neck.

The entire engagement fight had begun because Ainsley tried to destroy a memory.

Now Serena herself was saying objects were not the memory.

But the choice still belonged to Eira.

Not Ainsley.

Then the recording reached its final section.

“There is one person I still haven’t forgiven.”

Galen looked up.

“So if everyone is sitting there believing this is about Ainsley, it isn’t.”

Michael frowned.

Serena said the name.

“Galen.”

Silence.

Galen stared at the recorder.

Serena continued.

“I love him.”

“But I have not forgiven him for what happened to Daniel.”

Galen’s face changed.

Michael looked toward him.

Ainsley stopped crying.

Daniel Moretti.

Galen’s oldest son.

From his first marriage.

Dead at seventeen.

A name almost never spoken in the family.

Eira had never heard it.

Michael whispered:

“Galen.”

Galen stood.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

May you like

Serena had just connected the conflict in their marriage to a death that happened ten years before she met Ainsley.

And Galen already knew why.
