Chapter 9

The west warehouse attack lasted four minutes.

Nobody died.

That had never been the purpose.

Three trucks belonging to the Moretti crew were destroyed.

Crates burned.

Two guards were injured.

Witnesses saw men wearing Bellini pins leaving in black jackets.

Exactly as Vincent intended.

By the time Eleanor received the full report, word was already moving through Queens.

Bellini attacked Moretti.

During Adrian’s engagement night.

Perfect timing.

If Eleanor denied it, she looked out of control.

If she accepted it, war began.

If Adrian claimed responsibility, he began his “leadership” with blood.

Eleanor looked at Grant.

“You knew.”

He shook his head.

“I knew there would be pressure.”

“Pressure?”

“One hit.”

“You moved the weapons.”

“Vincent said nobody would get hurt.”

Eleanor almost laughed.

Grant noticed.

“What?”

“You believed that?”

His face hardened.

Eleanor continued.

“You mocked my age.”

“Called me a grieving widow.”

“Explained leadership to me.”

Then she leaned closer.

“And you believed a man preparing fake uniforms and hidden guns when he said nobody would get hurt.”

Grant looked away.

Serena stood beside Adrian.

Not touching him now.

She seemed suddenly aware the engagement ring might not be armor.

Eleanor asked Adrian:

“What do you think happens next?”

He hesitated.

“Moretti retaliates.”

“Yes.”

“Against us.”

“Yes.”

“And Vincent uses it.”

Eleanor watched him.

“Explain.”

Adrian thought.

“If the family is at war…”

His face changed.

“…a leadership transition looks dangerous.”

“Keep going.”

“He can say I need guidance.”

“Yes.”

“His guidance.”

Exactly.

Adrian stared at the old council chair.

He had never been the destination.

He was the door.

Vincent planned to put Adrian in the chair while keeping the actual levers.

A thirty-year-old new boss.

New engagement.

Immediate war.

Older capo beside him “helping.”

Serena hosting the house.

Grant commanding crews.

Everyone dependent on Vincent’s experience.

Then Serena realized something.

“He needs Adrian alive.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“For now.”

Serena’s face tightened.

Adrian heard.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor answered.

“Vincent doesn’t build partners.”

She looked at Serena and Grant.

“He builds temporary necessities.”

Grant scoffed.

“You don’t know him.”

Henry answered.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Henry’s expression was grim.

“Vincent challenged Matteo’s father once.”

Eleanor looked at him.

This was new.

“When?”

“Thirty years ago.”

“What happened?”

“He backed down before the vote.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn’t have enough support.”

Henry looked at the ribbons.

“He never forgot.”

There it was.

This wasn't about Eleanor alone.

Vincent had wanted the chair before Adrian was born.

Matteo's father denied him.

Matteo inherited.

Then Eleanor led after Matteo’s death.

Three generations of Bellini power had passed around Vincent.

He was done waiting.

Serena whispered:

“He told me women always take what men are afraid to claim.”

Eleanor looked at her.

Serena continued.

“He said you took Matteo’s chair because Adrian was too young.”

“So you believed I stole it.”

Serena’s jaw tightened.

“He said you never planned to return it.”

Eleanor almost smiled.

“Did you ever ask Adrian what he wanted?”

Serena looked at him.

No.

Of course not.

She had told him.

Vincent had told her.

Grant had told everyone.

Adrian had never been asked.

Eleanor turned toward him.

“Do you want it?”

The question shocked him.

The chair.

Now.

Tonight.

Do you want it?

Adrian stared at his mother.

Then the ruined lawn.

The fake uniforms.

Serena.

Grant.

The report from the warehouse.

Finally:

“Not like this.”

Eleanor nodded.

First honest answer of the evening.

Serena stepped toward him.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian looked at her.

“It means I’m not taking anything because you humiliated my mother into giving it.”

Serena’s face hardened.

“After everything I did for you?”

There it was.

Not love.

Investment.

Adrian heard it too.

Then Thomas approached Eleanor.

“Vincent just arrived.”

Everyone turned toward the main drive.

A black sedan stopped beyond the garden lights.

May you like

Vincent Bellini stepped out.

He had come to collect the result.
