Chapter 12

Eleanor’s explanation arrived through deposition.

She had spent thirty-eight years watching the Vale family company nearly collapse three separate times.

Her husband died believing the company would pass intact to Gregory.

Eleanor interpreted preserving Vale Holdings as preserving her marriage, her identity, and the future she thought her son deserved.

Then Clara invested twelve million dollars and became powerful enough to block decisions.

At first Eleanor was grateful.

Later she resented it.

When the downtown property sale became possible, Eleanor saw one chance to erase the debt and restore control.

Clara’s stake stood in the way.

Eleanor told herself Clara already had Marconi money.

That losing several million dollars would not change her life.

That hundreds of Vale employees mattered more.

That Gregory could repair the marriage later.

Every step became easier after the previous one.

The fake affair.

The ring.

The banquet humiliation.

The lie about the baby.

Rebecca asked Eleanor during deposition:

“You knew Mrs. Vale was carrying a boy?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“Yes.”

“And you told her she was unworthy of your son because she could not bear him a son?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked toward Clara.

For the first time, there was no superiority in her face.

“Because I knew it would hurt.”

Clara felt the baby move.

She placed one hand over him.

That answer removed the last excuse.

Eleanor had a motive that made psychological sense.

Fear of losing the company.

Fear of losing status.

Fear of failing the promise she believed she made to her dead husband.

None of it justified choosing the most painful weapon available against a pregnant woman who trusted her family.

Gregory heard the deposition too.

Afterward he asked Clara for five minutes.

She agreed.

“I spent years thinking Mom survived everything because she was stronger than everyone else,” he said.

Clara waited.

“I never noticed that every crisis ended with somebody else paying.”

“That includes you.”

He nodded.

“And I passed the bill to you.”

Clara appreciated the sentence.

She did not reward it with forgiveness.
