Chapter 6

Rachel’s story changed the room.
Not because it secretly made Emma blood.
It did not.
That mattered.
She remained adopted.
Still family.
I asked Salvatore—my security chief in this story? No, let's say Carlo, my chief bodyguard—to retrieve the old incident record from memory and surviving men.
He returned with three guards who had been present five years earlier.
All confirmed it.
Rachel Walsh dragged David away from gunfire.
Covered him.
Stayed with him.
Then treated one of our injured men before leaving.
She died three years later in an unrelated crash.
Laura adopted Emma afterward.
Margaret listened without expression.
Then said:
“That does not change succession.”
I stared.
Incredible.
No shame.
No pause.
Just succession.
“You heard that Emma’s mother saved David.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I’m grateful.”
I almost laughed.
“Grateful.”
She nodded.
“But gratitude is not blood.”
There it was.
Perfect.
Cold.
Clean.
I looked at David.
He stared at her with disgust.
Margaret continued.
“You think emotions should determine inheritance?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I think character should affect who I trust.”
Her face tightened.
Different.
I had never planned to make Emma a future boss.
She was three.
Absurd.
But Margaret needed everyone to believe accepting Emma at the table meant abolishing every boundary.
Fear works best when exaggerated.
She continued.
“Today she sits beside David. Tomorrow Laura names her equal in family rights. Then what?”
Laura stared.
“Then she is my daughter.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer you get.”
Good.
My daughter’s voice changed.
Stronger.
I looked at her.
For six months, Margaret had made Laura feel she needed to defend adoption as though it were a temporary permission.
Now she stopped.
Emma did not need to earn Moretti acceptance through Rachel’s bravery.
Rachel saving David was meaningful.
Not qualifying.
That distinction mattered.
I turned toward Margaret.
“Even if Rachel had done nothing for us, Emma would still sit at my table.”
Silence.
“Because Laura chose her.”
Margaret stared.
“And because I choose Laura.”

That was the moment she understood.
The succession fight she tried to prevent had just pushed me closer to the decision she feared.
