Chapter 17

Eight years after the snowstorm, Ethan was eleven.

Tall.

Shoes constantly untied.

Still loved that wooden train though he denied it.

We spent Christmas at the same house.

Storm outside.

Warm lights inside.

Elise’s photographs remained.

Not everywhere.

Enough.

Mark remarried eventually.

Different woman.

Kind.

Patient.

She never asked Ethan to call her Mom.

He chose a nickname instead.

Worked perfectly.

After dinner, Ethan stood by the front door watching snow pile against the steps.

I joined him.

“Cold.”

“Yeah.”

Then he looked at me.

“Did you really carry me in from out there?”

“Yes.”

“All the way?”

“You were three. You weighed nothing.”

He smiled.

Then:

“Did you really slap Claudia?”

I sighed.

“Unfortunately.”

“Mom would’ve laughed.”

I looked at him.

Maybe.

Probably.

Then Ethan asked:

“Whose house is it now?”

There.

The question.

For years Claudia had claimed:

This is my house.

Then I corrected her.

But time had taught me something.

A house can belong legally to one person and emotionally to everyone who is safe inside it.

I looked at Ethan.

“Mine.”

He nodded.

Then I added:

“But home belongs to whoever is loved here.”

He considered that.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“My stepmom?”

“Yes.”

“Me?”

“Especially you.”

Snow hit the glass.

He did not flinch.

Then he opened the door.

Cold air rushed inside.

Mark shouted from the dining room:

“Shoes first!”

Ethan laughed and closed it again.

Good.

Rules.

Real ones.

May you like

The kind designed to keep children warm.

Not afraid.
