Chapter 15

Thomas did not leave the terrace freely.

Neither did Marcus.

Neither did Vanessa.

I did not stage their disappearance.

That had been anger talking.

And Thomas noticed.

“You threatened me.”

“Yes.”

“Now you hesitate.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“I changed my mind.”

He smiled cruelly.

“Soft.”

I shook my head.

“Controlled.”

That bothered him more.

He understood violence.

Restraint confused him.

“You think letting me live makes you better?”

“This isn’t about better.”

“Then what?”

“Ending your access.”

His face changed.

“No private crews.”

Silence.

“No old gate codes.”

His jaw tightened.

“No capos answer your calls.”

He laughed.

“You can’t erase forty years.”

“I don’t need to.”

I looked around.

“I only need tomorrow to stop obeying yesterday.”

Antonio nodded.

One by one, others did too.

Thomas saw it.

Power leaving a man is quiet.

No explosion.

Just people no longer looking to him before moving.

Vanessa shouted:

“What about me?”

Bianca stared.

“You pushed a child into deep water.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“He survived.”

My mother’s expression turned cold.

“You sound exactly like him.”

That hurt Vanessa.

Good.

Marcus asked:

“What happens to us?”

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at them.

“Nothing tonight.”

Thomas laughed.

“You don’t know what to do.”

“No.”

I almost smiled.

“I know exactly what anger wants me to do.”

Pause.

“I’m choosing after Ethan sleeps.”

That silenced him.

For once, my son’s needs controlled timing.

Not Thomas.

Bianca walked toward me.

“Can I come with you?”

Twelve years.

I wanted to say yes.

Immediately.

Instead I looked at Ethan.

He stared at her.

Then nodded.

“Grandma can come.”

Bianca’s eyes filled.

Thomas watched.

Every relationship he had spent years controlling now moved without him.

That was his real punishment.

Not pain.

Irrelevance.

We left the wedding together.

Me.

My son.

My mother.

Behind us, Thomas shouted:

“You’ll regret trusting her!”

Bianca stopped.

I did too.

Then Ethan turned around.

“Grandpa.”

Thomas stared.

My son said:

“Mommy came when I fell.”

Silence.

“She came.”

Then he took my hand and kept walking.

May you like

Thomas had spent his life convincing people nobody would come if they disobeyed him.

Ethan had learned the opposite in fifteen seconds.
