Chapter 14

Eudora changed.

That did not mean she returned.

Important.

A year after the engagement ended, she wrote me.

Not apology number twelve.

Information.

She had left Cedric’s house.

Started working with Lenora on a support residence for widowed mothers connected to Ainsworth employees.

My first reaction was suspicion.

Guilt project.

Image repair.

Maybe both.

Then she wrote one line I respected.

You do not need to believe this proves anything about me.

Good.

Change should survive without audience.

I did not respond.

Months later, Verity mentioned Eudora had contacted her once.

Not directly.

Through her sister.

Asked whether Verity wanted no contact permanently.

Verity said yes.

Eudora respected it.

Good.

Cedric did not change much.

He eventually lost most practical influence because younger relatives stopped bringing decisions through him.

No exile.

No coup.

Irrelevance.

Sometimes culture moves around a person before the person notices history has left them behind.

Adrian and Lenora stayed married.

Not because the alliance required it.

Because they wanted to.

They had another child three years later.

A daughter.

Cedric made one comment about legacy.

Lenora told him to leave dinner.

He did.

Apparently lessons can arrive late.

Benjamin’s name returned too.

They spoke it.

Displayed one photograph privately.

No replacement mythology.

Their daughter grew beside the memory of a brother she never met.

No one asked her to fill anything.

That mattered to me more than politics.
