Chapter 8

The court battle created the hardest decision for Clara, not Salvatore.

Rachel proposed requesting full forensic review of Leo’s descendant trust, Sterling Family Management, household accounts, and any financial records used to fund Arthur’s custody preparation.

That would expose Arthur.

It could also expose Salvatore.

Years earlier, when Clara married, Salvatore’s own family entities had participated in legitimate joint investments with Sterling companies.

Some transactions were clean.

Some were old-fashioned.

Handshake pricing.

Related-party fees.

Security arrangements.

Minority interests routed through holding companies because older relatives disliked simple structures.

If Leo’s trust auditors followed the money far enough, they could reach Carbone entities.

Salvatore’s lawyers warned him.

“You may invite scrutiny into your own businesses.”

Salvatore looked at Clara.

She understood.

“You don’t have to agree.”

He almost answered immediately.

Then stopped.

This was her case.

“What do you want?”

Clara looked surprised.

She thought for a long time.

“I want to know what they did with Leo’s money.”

Salvatore nodded.

“Then do it.”

Margaret said:

“That is not the only decision.”

She looked at Salvatore.

“The trust may have invested in Carbone-affiliated ventures too.”

“Then review those.”

“You could lose money.”

“Review them.”

“Tax questions?”

“Review them.”

“Old family contracts?”

“Review them.”

Clara looked at her father.

“Dad.”

He turned.

“Don’t open your whole life because you feel guilty you didn’t know what was happening to me.”

The words stopped him.

He did feel guilty.

Clara continued.

“Do it only if it’s right.”

Salvatore looked toward Leo asleep in a bassinet.

Then back at her.

“It is.”

The petition was filed.

Independent forensic trustee review.

Full accounting of Leo’s trust.

Household reimbursements.

Related-party loans.

Administrative access.

Legal and investigative spending charged to Clara.

The court approved an interim independent fiduciary to review transactions while Arthur and Evelyn’s authority was restricted.

That was the hard-to-reverse step.

Once the independent fiduciary entered, neither family could control which records mattered.

Arthur’s lawyers fought it.

Lost.

Evelyn called three relatives trying to pressure Clara.

Rachel documented every contact.

Salvatore did not call Evelyn back.

That may have been the most difficult thing he did all week.

Then the review found something nobody expected.

The $8 million loan from Leo’s trust was not the first time Arthur had used the child’s assets.

It was only the largest.
