Chapter 9

Mara agreed to let Lily send a letter.
Not meet.
Not call.
A letter.
Dr. Melissa Grant, the child therapist helping Lily process the discovery, supported the idea.
Lily drew more than she wrote.
A purple house.
A yellow sun.
Three stick figures.
Then she asked Enzo:
“What color is Mommy’s hair?”
He swallowed.
“Brown.”
Lily changed one figure’s hair.
“What does Mommy like?”
“Coffee.”
“That’s not drawing.”
“True.”
“Flowers?”
“Peonies.”
Lily drew something that looked nothing like a peony.
Enzo told her it was perfect.
At the bottom, Lily wrote with help:
I know you wrote me.
Mara’s reply arrived four days later.
She told Lily she had thought about her every day.
No promises.
No adult explanations.
Only love.
Lily slept with the letter under her pillow.
That same week, investigators found the last piece needed to understand the mechanics.
Lucinda had opened a private mailbox under the family office’s name two weeks after Mara left.
For nearly three years, mail sent from Mara to the estate was diverted there before final delivery.
An assistant collected it.
Lucinda reviewed it.
Some envelopes were stored.
Others never reached the main residence at all.
The sealed letters in the pantry were only the ones she kept.
“Why keep them?” Enzo asked.
Miriam did not know.
Maybe Lucinda could not bring herself to destroy them.
Maybe she wanted leverage.
Maybe she assumed Enzo would never search the pantry.
The reason could wait.
The motive behind the separation mattered more.
Then the forensic investigators recovered the old restructuring calendar.
The week Mara left, Enzo had been scheduled to sign documents removing Lucinda from two powerful family committees.
He had also planned to announce that he, Mara, and Lily would leave the main estate permanently.
Both events were canceled after Mara disappeared.
Lucinda remained in power.
Enzo remained in the house.
Miriam placed the calendar beside the forged notices.
“The timing is no longer coincidence.”
Enzo nodded.
But something still bothered him.
“If Lucinda wanted Mara gone, why let her leave only for a few nights?”
Miriam looked at him.
“That may be the wrong assumption.”
“What?”
“That Lucinda reacted after Mara left.”
May you like
She tapped the calendar.
“What if she was preparing before the argument ever happened?”
