Chapter 6

Veronica’s debt came from her father.
Not luxury spending.
Not gambling.
A failed medical-supply business.
Personal guarantees.
Tax penalties.
Private lenders.
After her father died, Veronica inherited more than she understood.
She spent three years hiding the damage.
Roman listened without interrupting.
Her voice kept breaking.
She hated that more than his anger.
“I was paying it down.”
“With what?”
“My work.”
“And when that wasn't enough?”
She looked at her engagement ring.
Roman saw the answer.
Helena saw it too.
“She needed you.”
Veronica’s head snapped up.
“I loved him.”
Helena laughed once.
“You loved what marrying him solved.”
Veronica’s face tightened.
Roman raised one hand.
Silence returned.
He hated that Helena’s cruelty did not make the accusation false.
“Did you know about the trust?”
“No.”
“Did you plan to use my death to clear your debt?”
“No.”
“Did you believe I was dead?”
Veronica’s eyes met his.
A pause.
Too long.
Roman’s expression changed.
“You weren't sure.”
Veronica inhaled sharply.
That was it.
Not certainty.
Doubt.
She admitted Roman’s death confirmation felt wrong.
No body.
No direct call from his Sicilian security chief.
No funeral preparations.
Only legal paperwork and Helena insisting there was no point asking questions.
Roman’s eyes hardened.
“And you stayed quiet.”
Veronica whispered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her hand closed around the engagement ring.
“Because if you were dead…”
She could not finish.
Roman did it for her.
“The trust could save you.”
A tear slipped down her face.
She did not wipe it.
“Yes.”
Roman looked away.
That was betrayal enough.
Then his security chief entered.
They had found Rachel.
Not physically.
Her passport had been used two days earlier.
Zurich.
A bank security camera captured her.
She was not alone.
Beside Rachel stood Adrian.
The room changed.
Adrian’s breathing stopped.
Roman slowly turned.
“So.”
Adrian’s hand moved toward his jacket.
Three bodyguards drew at once.
Roman raised one finger.
Nobody fired.
Adrian froze.
Roman’s voice was almost calm.
“You weren't searching for Rachel.”
May you like
He looked at the photograph.
“You were protecting her.”
