Chapter 9

There were fourteen recordings.

We listened to seven.

That was enough.

Ethan had known.

Not everything.

Enough.

He knew Mercer was talking to my father.

He knew someone had been asking questions about our delivery date.

He knew hospital access had been discussed.

He knew Noah had become important to people who viewed Ethan's network as something that could be inherited, captured or redirected.

And he knew he might not live long enough to stop it.

One recording was for me.

Vittorio asked if I wanted privacy.

“No.”

I needed them to hear it.

Ethan's voice filled the room.

“Emma, your father may tell you he's protecting you.”

Dad looked down.

“He probably believes it.”

My throat tightened.

“That doesn't make it protection.”

I closed my eyes.

Ethan continued.

“Richard thinks control and love are the same thing.”

Dad's face changed.

“They aren't.”

No one moved.

“If Mercer reaches him, he'll use that.”

I looked at my father.

Ethan had predicted him perfectly.

Not because Dad was evil.

Because he was predictable.

Mercer promised him a way to regain control over his daughter.

Dad gave him access to our lives.

Mercer promised Noah would be safe.

Dad helped him take Noah.

Every betrayal dressed itself as protection.

Vittorio played another file.

This one was for him.

“Dad, if something happens to me, don't make Emma stay.”

Vittorio looked away.

“She chooses.”

My tears fell.

“Not you.”

A pause.

“Not Richard.”

Another.

“Not me.”

I covered my mouth.

“She chooses.”

Vittorio nodded once.

As if Ethan were standing in front of him.

“I understand.”

Mercer laughed softly.

“You think recordings change anything?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He smiled.

Then I continued.

“But your face did.”

His smile disappeared.

He hadn't been afraid when accused of kidnapping.

Not when Vittorio hit him.

Not when Dad's meetings were exposed.

He had been afraid of the memory card.

That meant something on it mattered more than the rest.

“What's in the files we haven't played?”

Mercer said nothing.

Vittorio looked at him.

“You know.”

Nothing.

Samuel opened the next recording.

Ethan's voice.

“Cole isn't working alone.”

Mercer closed his eyes.

There.

Finally.

The bigger truth.

Ethan continued.

“If he gets close to Emma or the babies, someone inside Dad's organization gave him the timing.”

Vittorio went still.

“My organization?”

Ethan's voice continued.

“Someone close enough to know the hospital plan.”

I looked around the room.

Samuel.

Bodyguards.

Vittorio.

Dad.

Mark.

Mercer.

A betrayal from inside.

Not merely from my family.

Ethan had known that too.

The final words in the recording were simple.

“I don't know who.”

Silence.

Then:

“But Cole does.”

Every eye turned toward Mercer.

He smiled again.

Smaller this time.

Tired.

Vittorio stepped toward him.

Mercer shook his head.

“You want the name?”

“Yes.”

“It isn't free.”

Vittorio looked at him.

“You misunderstand your position.”

Mercer laughed.

“No.”

He glanced toward Noah.

“I understand it perfectly.”

Then he said something that changed everything again.

“The man who gave me the delivery window…”

May you like

He looked directly at Vittorio.

“…stood beside Ethan at his funeral.”
