Chapter 12

Rocco began restitution before the criminal case finished.

Every legitimate unpaid vendor invoice was reviewed by outside accountants.

Verified amounts were paid with interest.

Carter Bakery received its full balance.

Daniel stared at the bank confirmation for almost a minute.

Then he looked at Rocco.

“I don’t want charity.”

“It isn’t.”

“You added interest.”

“We used your money for nine weeks.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

That distinction mattered to him.

The acquired businesses were more complicated.

Rocco could not simply order North Harbor to give them back.

There were investors.

Loans.

Contracts.

Other legal rights.

So independent counsel negotiated individually with former owners.

Some wanted money.

Some wanted an opportunity to repurchase ownership.

Patricia Lowell wanted neither at first.

“I’m sixty.”

She looked around the flower shop.

“I don’t want to rebuild my life because your nephew decided I needed a lesson.”

Rocco accepted that.

A settlement funded her retirement and compensated documented losses.

The business continued under new management.

Not every wound needed to be restored to its original shape.

The club itself paid heavily.

Legal fees.

Vendor claims.

Canceled events.

Lost membership.

Outside management costs.

Rocco covered part personally because he had been the owner who delegated power without building enough oversight.

Samuel told him he was taking responsibility for things Dominic did.

Rocco disagreed.

“I’m taking responsibility for what I failed to supervise.”

Different guilt.

Still real.

Maeve did not understand any of that.

She understood that her father smiled more.

That the bakery replaced the broken mixer.

That new sneakers appeared in her room because Daniel could finally pay himself normally again.

One Saturday she asked:

“Are we rich now?”

Daniel laughed.

“No.”

“Good.”

He looked confused.

“Why good?”

Maeve shrugged.

“Rich people at the club are grumpy.”

Daniel nearly dropped a tray laughing.

When Rocco heard the story later, even he smiled.

Then Daniel became serious.

“I’m not sure I want the contract back.”

Rocco had expected that.

“You don’t owe the club anything.”

“My father supplied that place.”

“I know.”

“That’s the problem.”

Daniel looked toward Maeve.

“I spent fourteen years treating history like security.”

Rocco understood exactly what he meant.
