Chapter 4

Rebecca had not disappeared willingly.
That became obvious by morning.
Her old neighbor remembered the last week she lived there.
Two Cross cars outside.
Gordon visiting twice.
Rebecca crying in the hallway.
Then gone.
No packed boxes.
No goodbye.
Just absence.
I did not need police.
I needed my own people to stop lying.
So I gathered every household manager who worked under Walter during the previous two years.
Most knew nothing.
Three knew pieces.
One man named Felix knew enough.
He broke when I mentioned Molly’s shoes.
“Mr. Walter said the Crane widow was unstable.”
Of course.
Women become unstable whenever powerful men need their fear discredited.
“What happened?”
Rebecca discovered her monthly support had been reduced by half.
She complained.
Walter told her Cross resources were limited.
Then offered a deal.
Molly could stay at the estate temporarily.
In exchange, Rebecca would receive full support again.
That sounded generous.
Until Walter began demanding things.
Messages carried to other widows.
Names of families complaining.
Information about which former associates were angry at Cross.
Rebecca refused.
The support stopped again.
Then Elliot’s medical expenses increased.
She panicked.
Walter made another offer.
Cross would pay everything.
But both children would spend more time under family supervision.
I stared at Felix.
“He bought access to her children using money we already owed her.”
Felix looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
There.
That was the system.
Not kidnapping.
Not random cruelty.
Dependency engineered into control.
Then Felix said something worse.
“Rebecca tried to take them back.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“Mr. Gordon blocked her.”
“When?”
“Last August.”
The same time Molly stayed here.
Rebecca came to the estate demanding both children.
Walter allowed her to see only one.
Molly.
Then he forced Rebecca to choose.
Leave with Molly and lose all financial support for Elliot’s care.
Or leave Molly temporarily and keep Elliot’s support funded.
I felt sick.
The same choice game.
One child or another.
Safety turned into a test of loyalty.
Rebecca chose Elliot.
Molly stayed.
And apparently never forgave herself.
Then Felix whispered:
“She came back three nights later.”
“What happened?”
May you like
He looked terrified.
“After that, I never saw Rebecca again.”
