Chapter 12

Dante refused to become the demonstration.

That did not mean he forgave anyone.

Helena remained stripped of authority.

She could not approach Lily without permission.

Maria decided for herself whether to remain in the estate.

Dante asked once.

“Do you want to leave?”

Maria looked surprised.

“No.”

“Because Caruso is your blood?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She looked toward Lily.

“Because she needs people who know what the bell does to children.”

Dante nodded.

That answer he trusted more.

Gabriel remained under watch.

Not prisoner.

Not family.

Something between.

Dante asked him:

“Where would Sebastian take Anna?”

Gabriel shook his head.

“He changes locations.”

“Patterns.”

“Old children’s houses.”

“Quiet House.”

“Maybe.”

Dante did not go.

Instead he fed Sebastian information.

A rumor spread through Caruso circles.

Dante had beaten Helena nearly to death.

False.

Another:

Maria had been locked in the cellar after claiming Caruso blood.

False.

Another:

Lily had been sent away because Dante could no longer tolerate weakness around him.

False.

Every rumor painted Dante as Salvatore reborn.

Sebastian reacted.

Not directly.

Three former Caruso servants appeared near old properties.

Two capos received anonymous instructions to prepare for “transition.”

One retired family doctor vanished.

Gabriel smiled sadly.

“He believes you failed.”

“Good.”

“He’ll come closer.”

“That is the point.”

Helena listened.

Then said:

“You’re using his certainty.”

“Yes.”

“You understand him.”

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

“I understand arrogance.”

Helena almost smiled.

She had seen enough of it in the family.

Then Maria had a nightmare.

She woke at 2:13 in the morning standing in the east corridor.

Barefoot.

No memory of leaving bed.

Her hand rested on a hidden panel.

Anthony found her before she opened it.

Maria panicked.

Dante came.

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know how I got here.”

Dante saw the wall.

No visible door.

“Bell?”

“I heard one.”

“Real?”

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel arrived.

His face changed.

“That’s the entrance.”

“To Salvatore’s room.”

“Yes.”

Maria backed away.

“No.”

Dante did not ask her to open it.

Gabriel frowned.

“You need what’s inside.”

“No.”

“Sebastian will.”

“Then he can come open it himself.”

Gabriel stared.

Dante continued:

“I am not using Maria’s trauma as a key.”

Maria began crying.

Not weakness.

Relief.

Dante looked at Anthony.

“Seal the corridor.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“You may lose the chance.”

Dante’s voice chilled.

“My father built chances out of children.”

He stepped closer.

“I am done inheriting his methods.”

That night, someone rang a brass bell outside the estate gate.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody responded.

Then a car appeared.

Black.

No plates.

Stopped beyond the gate.

Rear door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Anna.

Dante forgot how to breathe.

Alive.

Thin.

Dark coat.

Hair shorter.

But Anna.

Lily’s mother.

She stood beneath the gate lights.

Dante moved.

Then stopped.

Gabriel caught the change.

“Trap.”

Dante knew.

Maybe.

Anna looked toward the camera.

“Dante.”

Her voice came through the intercom.

He closed his eyes.

Real.

“Anna.”

She began crying.

“Lily?”

“Safe.”

“Maria?”

Dante frowned.

Anna asked about Maria before Helena.

Before herself.

“Safe.”

“Do not open the gate.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Anna looked behind her.

No person visible.

“He’s listening.”

“Sebastian.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel went pale.

Anna heard his breathing through the intercom.

“Gabriel?”

He stepped closer.

“Anna.”

She closed her eyes.

“You should never have come back.”

Gabriel looked devastated.

“I know.”

Dante interrupted.

“Where is Sebastian?”

Anna whispered:

“Everywhere the bells are.”

“Not enough.”

“He doesn’t need to be inside.”

“Then why bring you?”

“To make you leave.”

Dante looked toward Lily’s floor.

Exactly.

Anna continued:

“He wants Maria at the east wall.”

“We know.”

“Do not open it.”

“What is inside?”

Anna stared at the camera.

“Not names.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Then?”

Anna’s face became frightened.

“Children.”

Dante went cold.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

The old system had not ended.

Somewhere beneath his estate—

children might still be hidden.

Dante looked toward the east corridor.

Maria had nearly opened the door.

Anna whispered:

“There are six.”

Then someone pulled her backward out of camera view.

The car sped away.

Dante stood motionless.

Six children.

Under his house.

Maybe.

Or another manipulation.

He looked at Maria.

She was shaking.

Dante spoke quietly.

“We open the room.”

Gabriel nodded.

Maria looked terrified.

Dante turned to her.

“Not with you.”

She stared.

“How?”

Dante looked toward the wall.

May you like

“Like adults.”

Then ordered men to break the stone.
