Chapter 15

Marcus eventually wrote to Charlotte.

She was eight.

He sent the letter to me first.

Good.

He did not ask me to deliver it automatically.

He wrote:

I knew you were behind that wall and I did not open the door. I was trying to protect my sister from consequences. That was wrong.

Specific.

Then:

You do not owe me an answer.

Better.

I asked Charlotte whether she wanted to read something from Marcus.

“Who Marcus?”

Children.

Time.

I explained briefly.

She remembered:

“Punch man?”

Accurate.

She read the letter with help.

Then shrugged.

“Okay.”

No reply.

I almost laughed.

Adults imagine apologies produce ceremonies.

Children sometimes file them and move on.

Marcus never returned to Sterling work.

He visited one public foundation event years later.

Charlotte recognized him only after I said his name.

He kept distance.

Good.

Boundaries surviving remorse.
