Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT MICHAEL DISAPPEARED

Michael was thirteen when he disappeared for six hours.

He remembered pieces.

An argument with Richard.

Rain.

A bus station.

A woman buying him coffee.

Jessica had always said a family driver found him.

That was a lie too.

Claire found him.

Two years after leaving the Hayes home, she returned secretly to see Michael.

She had asked a kitchen worker to tell him where she would be.

Michael came.

At first he was furious.

Richard had spent two years telling him Claire abandoned him because she wanted freedom more than family.

Thirteen-year-old Michael repeated those words to her.

Claire let him finish.

Then gave him every birthday card Richard had returned unopened.

Michael began crying.

He told her he hated their father.

Then immediately said he loved him.

Claire understood.

She did not ask him to choose.

Michael wanted to leave with her.

Claire refused.

“You’re thirteen.”

“So were you when you started taking care of me.”

“That’s why I know you shouldn’t have to.”

Michael remembered the sentence now.

He sat in the ballroom with both hands over his face.

The memory returned in fragments.

Claire holding an umbrella over both of them.

Claire walking him back.

Claire making him promise not to run away again.

Then Richard arrived.

Michael remembered his father’s expression.

Not relief.

Rage.

Richard told Claire never to come near Michael again.

Claire answered:

“He came looking for me.”

Richard struck the wall beside her head.

Michael flinched now as if the sound had returned.

Jessica watched all of it from the car.

She did nothing.

Claire looked at her mother.

Then said:

“One day he’ll understand what you chose.”

Michael stared at Jessica.

“You let him send her away again.”

“Yes.”

“And then told me a driver found me.”

“Yes.”

He stood.

He did not shout.

That made Jessica more frightened.

“You’re leaving.”

Her face changed.

“Michael.”

“Not from the family.”

He paused.

“From Emily’s house.”

Emily looked at him.

Michael continued.

“I grabbed her arm.”

He looked toward his daughters.

“I let you treat them like something lesser.”

Then back to Jessica.

“If I stay there tonight, I’ll spend all night explaining instead of understanding what I did.”

Emily did not tell him to stay.

Roland did not interfere.

Michael left the ballroom alone.

For the first time in his life, Jessica could not follow him.

Roland stopped her.

“He asked for space.”

“He’s my son.”

“That sentence has done enough damage.”

Jessica looked at him.

Roland released her.

Then Emily spoke.

“Dad.”

Roland turned.

Her expression was not grateful.

It was angry.

“You knew Claire.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the Hales had done this to a daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And you still let me marry into this family without telling me.”

The room changed again.

Roland had expected judgment for Michael and Jessica.

Not himself.

Emily continued.

“You drove Claire away from here.”

“To safety.”

“You never checked what happened to Michael after.”

Roland had no answer.

She was right.

He had treated Claire’s escape like a completed problem.

Get the girl away.

Avoid bloodshed.

Respect her request.

Move on.

He never asked what remained inside the house.

Jessica looked toward him.

For once, they shared the same shame from opposite sides.

Then Roland’s phone rang.

An old number.

He almost ignored it.

Emily saw his expression.

“Answer.”

He did.

A woman’s voice came through.

Older than he remembered.

Still unmistakable.

“Roland.”

He stood completely still.

“Claire.”

Jessica covered her mouth.

Michael had already left.

Claire continued.

“I need you to listen before anyone interrupts.”

Roland waited.

“I didn’t leave the party because Michael looked like Richard.”

A pause.

“I left because I saw what he did after he grabbed Emily.”

Roland frowned.

“What did he do?”

Claire’s answer changed the night again.

“He followed Megan into the hallway.”

May you like

Roland looked toward the child.

“And when he thought nobody was watching, he got down on his knees and apologized to her.”
