Chapter 14

Rebecca asked Sarah for forgiveness.
Sarah did not give it.
Not yet.
I respected that.
Rebecca cried.
Said Grant manipulated her.
Said Vincent frightened her.
Said she was trying to protect her mother.
All partly true.
None erased Lily standing in a store with $11.40.
Sarah listened.
Then asked:
“When Owen cried at night because there wasn’t enough formula, did you hear him?”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Did you know there was money?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Grant took it?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Sarah nodded.
“That’s what I need to remember.”
Rebecca started crying harder.
Not because Sarah was cruel.
Because Sarah refused to let explanation become absolution.
Lily watched from the doorway.
I went to move her.
Sarah shook her head.
“She heard enough lies.”
Fair.
Rebecca looked at Lily.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily clutched her backpack.
“You said babies don’t remember being hungry.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
I felt my jaw tighten.
Sarah’s face changed.
“You told her that?”
Rebecca whispered, “I was trying to make her feel better.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Simple.
Again.
Children exposing adult euphemisms.
Rebecca had not comforted Lily.
She had taught her that suffering only mattered if the victim could remember it later.
Sarah looked at her sister.
“You don’t get to decide when I forgive you.”
Rebecca nodded.
That was progress.
Not reconciliation.
Just the first time someone accepted Sarah’s boundary without trying to negotiate it.
I watched Lily.
Maybe that was the real inheritance we needed to give her.

Not Mercer power.
Permission to say no and still belong.
