Chapter 1

My daughter was barefoot in the snow when I found her.

That was the first thing I saw.

Not Heather.

Not the electric clippers.

Louisa’s feet.

Three years old.

Thin pink pajamas.

Snow collecting around her toes.

A loose fabric restraint circled her waist against the low garden wall.

Her dark-blond hair covered the ground.

Heather grabbed another section.

The clippers buzzed.

Lydia watched.

“Thieves don’t deserve pretty hair.”

Louisa sobbed.

I dropped my handbag.

“LOUISA.”

Every adult turned.

I crossed the garden and ripped the restraint loose.

My daughter collapsed against me.

I removed my wool coat and wrapped her inside it.

“Mommy… I didn’t steal Grandma’s bracelet.”

“I know.”

I didn’t yet.

But a three-year-old trembling barefoot in snow did not need an investigator.

She needed her mother.

Lydia pulled the gold bracelet from her pocket and threw it against my chest.

“Control your child.”

Walter blocked the path to the house.

“Move.”

“No.”

“I’m taking her inside.”

“She needs consequences.”

“She needs warmth.”

Walter slapped me.

My head snapped sideways.

Louisa screamed.

He raised his hand again.

I passed her to my bodyguard.

Then caught Walter’s wrist.

One punch sent him backward through the rolling hot-drink station.

Heather panicked.

She hurled the clippers.

They struck my shoulder.

Then she ran.

I caught her and drove her backward into the wreath-and-gift display.

Only then did I open the hidden garden camera on my phone.

The footage showed Heather kneeling beside Louisa’s bag.

Looking around.

Then deliberately placing Lydia’s bracelet inside.

I raised the phone.

“You framed a three-year-old child.”

Heather went white.

“That is absolutely unforgivable.”

Lydia rolled her eyes.

“Oh, spare us the performance.”

I turned.

She smiled coldly.

“The bracelet isn’t the important part.”

Heather whispered:

“Mom.”

Too late.

I stepped closer.

“Then what is?”

Lydia looked at Louisa.

My daughter immediately hid her face against the bodyguard.

And I understood.

The bracelet had never been the reason for the punishment.

It had only been the excuse.
