Chapter 15

Emma tried to apologize for recording Lucy.

I stopped her.

“You recorded because nobody listened.”

She looked down.

“I still filmed her crying.”

“Yes.”

She flinched.

I continued.

“And then you showed me.”

She looked up.

“I should have stopped it sooner.”

“Yes.”

I would not lie to make guilt disappear.

“But you were an employee standing against people who could remove you with one sentence.”

She nodded.

“That explains hesitation.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“It doesn’t erase it.”

“No.”

Good.

She understood.

Then Lucy entered the room.

Emma immediately wiped her face.

My daughter climbed onto the chair beside me.

“Why Emma sad?”

Emma laughed weakly.

“Because I should have helped faster.”

Lucy frowned.

“You helped.”

Simple.

Emma started crying harder.

Lucy looked confused.

I almost smiled.

Children do not understand why adults need complicated punishment before accepting simple truth.

Lucy climbed down and hugged Emma’s leg.

That ended the conversation better than I could.

Later, I asked Lucy one thing.

“Do you want Bianca to come back?”

She froze.

Immediate.

Clear.

“No.”

That was enough.

No persuasion.

No “but she loves you.”

No family pressure.

No lesson about forgiveness.

“No” was a complete answer.

Then Lucy looked worried.

“Are you sad?”

“Yes.”

Her face fell.

I touched her cheek.

“But that is not your job to fix.”

She stared.

That sentence mattered.

Bianca had taught her my happiness depended on obedience.

Call me Mommy so Daddy can have a real family.

I needed to replace that.

“You don’t have to like someone because I do.”

Lucy nodded slowly.

“And you never have to be hungry so I can be happy.”

Her eyes filled.

“Really?”

My chest tightened.

May you like

“Really.”

That was the promise that mattered now.
