Chapter 12

The redevelopment collapsed.

Not immediately.

North Harbor still owned several buildings.

Contracts remained valid.

Banks remained involved.

Life did not rearrange itself simply because Rocco discovered the truth.

But without club cooperation, the private vehicle entrance could not be built as designed.

Without the hidden neighborhood-fund support, North Harbor had to restructure its financing.

And once lenders learned that some acquisitions were connected to a procurement-manipulation investigation, they became cautious.

Vance Bakery still faced eviction.

That was the part Maeve’s parents cared about.

Rocco met Evan and Claire Vance with his attorney.

Evan looked exhausted before anyone spoke.

“If this is about compensation, we’re not looking for a payoff.”

Rocco nodded.

“I know.”

“The lease still ends.”

“I know.”

“North Harbor owns the building.”

“Yes.”

Evan rubbed his face.

“So what exactly changed?”

Claire Donnelly answered.

Evidence suggested Vance Bakery had been intentionally deprived of its club contract as part of a scheme to weaken its position during a property acquisition.

That gave the Vances potential civil claims.

It also gave North Harbor reasons to negotiate rather than litigate publicly.

A temporary lease extension was eventually reached.

Not forever.

Two years.

Market rent.

No special lifetime arrangement.

Enough time for Evan and his wife to decide whether they wanted to relocate, expand, or close on their own terms.

Rocco separately reinstated the bakery’s club supply contract only after an independent quality review confirmed it could still meet standards.

Evan smiled when he heard.

“You really audited the bread?”

Rocco looked at him.

“You said you didn’t want charity.”

“I don’t.”

“Then your bread has to be good.”

Evan laughed for the first time in weeks.

“It is.”

“Good.”

Maeve wandered into the meeting carrying another paper bag.

She put it on Rocco’s lap.

“No wheelchair today.”

“No.”

“Legs better?”

Everyone went silent.

Rocco looked at her solemn face.

“Much better.”

She nodded, satisfied.

Then handed him a cookie.

May you like

Rocco accepted it.

This time he paid.
