Chapter 13

The evidence against Lucian did not become stronger because Dominic hated him.

It became stronger because different sources agreed.

The recorder serial number tied back to Knox Strategic.

Device deployment logs showed one of Lucian’s employees had checked out the unit.

Building access records placed that employee inside the Caradonna mansion on a day Ava’s rabbit had been sent downstairs for cleaning.

An invoice listed the visit as “residential sensor maintenance.”

The employee initially refused to speak.

Then his attorney arranged an interview.

He admitted Lucian instructed him to insert a motion-activated recorder into an object likely to travel between rooms.

“Why the rabbit?” the investigator asked.

The technician looked embarrassed.

“Mr. Knox said nobody searches a child’s toy.”

That sentence ended any remaining claim that the placement was accidental.

The financial evidence developed more slowly.

Some Knox contracts were legitimate.

Others were overpriced.

Two contained duplicate billing.

One subcontractor appeared to have billed for guards who did not exist.

Rebecca refused to estimate losses until she could verify them.

Dominic accepted that.

He had finally learned that wanting a number quickly was how men like Lucian gained room to invent one.

Valeria provided another piece.

Three years earlier, Lucian asked her to persuade Dominic to stop attending quarterly vendor reviews.

She had joked that Dominic hated those meetings anyway.

Lucian replied:

Exactly.

At the time, she thought nothing of it.

Now it fit.

Dominic had become less involved.

Lucian became more necessary.

Margaret’s notes corroborated the household manipulation.

Peter Dalton’s old emails corroborated retaliation against employees who questioned certain invoices.

Anthony’s archived recommendation established that Lucian’s surveillance power had been a known governance risk.

No single revelation decided everything.

The pattern did.

Lucian made one final offer.

He would return disputed fees.

Resign quietly.

Destroy private recordings.

Provide passwords to every remaining archive.

In exchange, Dominic’s companies would not refer the surveillance or financial evidence externally.

Dominic’s attorney placed the proposal in front of him.

Margaret happened to be in the room.

“What do you think?” Dominic asked.

She did not touch the paper.

“Why are you asking me?”

“Because I trust you.”

Margaret shook her head.

“That isn’t enough anymore.”

Dominic frowned.

She pointed toward his attorney.

“Ask what protects the company.”

Then toward Anthony.

“Ask what protects the staff.”

Then toward the investigator’s report.

“Ask what you’re obligated to disclose.”

Then she looked at him.

“And after all that, decide what kind of man you want to be.”

Dominic smiled faintly.

“You could’ve just said reject it.”

Margaret stood.

“Then you wouldn’t have learned anything.”

The company rejected Lucian’s private settlement.

Relevant financial findings went to regulators, insurers, banking partners, and law enforcement as counsel determined appropriate.

Evidence concerning the hidden recordings was also provided to investigators.

Dominic did not know exactly what charges, if any, would ultimately survive.

May you like

That decision was no longer his.

For once, he considered that a strength.
