Chapter 1

I came home twelve days early and found my mother being fed dog scraps.

That was the first thing I understood.

The second was worse.

My children looked hungry enough to watch the plate hit the floor.

Margaret stood beside the boiling stockpot with Emma on one hip.

Her cardigan was torn.

Her cheek was bruised.

One wrist had a purple ring around it that looked exactly like fingers.

Vivian held that wrist.

My mother-in-law smiled while she forced Margaret backward toward the stove.

“Finish dinner. My dog couldn’t finish its food, so you get to eat what it left.”

Oliver stood barefoot in one sockless shoe at the doorway.

Four years old.

Watching the leftovers.

Not Vivian.

The food.

I froze.

Then Emma saw me.

“Mommy.”

Vivian turned.

Her face changed.

I crossed the kitchen.

Took Emma from Margaret.

Pulled Oliver behind me.

“What happened?”

Margaret opened her mouth.

Ryan walked in.

My husband.

My senior underboss.

The man I had left in charge of the house while I handled twelve days of Bennett business.

He didn’t look shocked.

He grabbed my shoulder.

Shoved me into the preparation counter.

Then slapped me.

“Apologize to my mother and get back in that kitchen.”

The room went completely still.

I slowly turned my face back toward him.

Ryan raised his hand again.

I caught his wrist.

Pulled him off balance.

Hit him once.

He crashed backward into the catering cart as trays, boards and baskets scattered across the tile.

Vivian grabbed a serving board and threw it.

It struck my shoulder.

Then she lunged for Margaret.

I intercepted her.

One slap sent her into the pantry rack.

She fell beneath tumbling linens and empty baskets.

I looked at Ryan.

“From now on, my mother won’t serve you anymore.”

Pause.

“And neither will this house.”

For the first time, Ryan looked frightened.

Then Oliver whispered behind me:

“Mommy…”

I crouched.

“What?”

His eyes went toward Ryan.

“Daddy said you weren’t coming back.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

May you like

And I knew the twelve days I had been away had not simply given them time to become cruel.

They had expected me to disappear.
