Chapter 14

Vincent came.

Two days later.

Alone.

Older.

Thinner.

Still carrying Stefano’s arrogance around like inherited jewelry.

He entered the council room and looked first at me.

Then Grace.

Then Maya’s bear.

His expression changed.

“So that survived.”

Grace hugged it closer to Maya.

“You knew?”

“Marcus carried it everywhere.”

I stared.

“You saw him the week he died.”

Vincent nodded.

That was new.

“He confronted Stefano.”

Grace stopped breathing.

“When?”

“Three days before the warehouse.”

Marcus had gotten closer than any of us knew.

He told Stefano he had discovered the altered guard plan and would tell me.

Stefano threatened Grace.

Marcus backed away publicly.

Privately, he started hiding evidence.

The blue star.

The token.

The photo.

Everything suddenly made sense.

“He knew his daughter was the leverage.”

“Yes.”

Grace’s face changed.

“He died protecting me too.”

Vincent did not answer.

He did not need to.

I asked the question that mattered.

“Did you order Lorenzo’s death?”

Vincent looked toward Diana.

Then Mark.

Finally me.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Mark staggered back one step.

Diana covered her mouth.

No euphemism.

No accident.

No “protecting the family.”

Just yes.

“Why?”

“Because Lorenzo was going to expose everyone.”

“Everyone who?”

“Carlo. Mark. my father’s surviving captains. Me.”

“So you collapsed a building.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“I chose the branch over one man.”

Grace laughed bitterly.

“There it is.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The same sentence.”

Vincent frowned.

Grace continued.

“Diana chose Mark over my father’s truth. Carlo chose Mark over confession. You chose your branch over Lorenzo.”

She looked at me.

“And everyone keeps acting like the person they sacrificed caused the problem.”

The room went quiet.

Vincent stared at her.

For the first time, his confidence shifted.

Grace had reduced decades of Mafia justification into something too simple to decorate.

Sacrifice someone lower.

Then call it preservation.

I stood.

“Vincent loses every remaining Marzano contact.”

He smiled.

“You think you control men I built?”

“No.”

I looked around.

“I think they get to hear you admit what you did.”

That was different.

Every captain connected to Vincent would hear his own words.

Not a rumor.

Not my interpretation.

His confession.

Visibility again.

He had survived twelve years because people owed a ghost.

Now they would decide whether they still wanted to owe a murderer standing in daylight.
