Chapter 13

Garrett lost every Carbone command that night.

No ceremonial punishment.

No beating.

No public degradation.

I simply removed the access marriage had given him.

He stared at me when I finished.

“That’s it?”

“No.”

I looked toward Rafe.

“His orders are no longer recognized. His personal guards leave Carbone property tonight. No capo meets him privately under my name.”

Garrett laughed bitterly.

“You’re erasing me.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I’m separating you from things that were never yours.”

That hurt more.

Good.

Evelyn stood.

“And me?”

“You leave the estate.”

Her face went white.

“You cannot throw out your husband’s mother.”

“Former husband’s mother.”

Garrett looked at the floor.

Evelyn stared at me.

“You made vows.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Garrett.

“So did he.”

Silence.

No legal speech.

No paperwork.

The marriage ended where its meaning ended.

The ring had already said enough.

Evelyn turned toward Miriam.

“This is what you wanted.”

My mother looked tired.

“No.”

“You hated him.”

“No.”

“You poisoned her against him.”

Miriam sighed.

“Evelyn, your son kicked me.”

As explanations went, difficult to improve.

Several capos almost smiled.

Evelyn did not.

She stepped closer.

“You think sitting beside Alessia makes you powerful?”

Miriam looked at the chair.

Then stood.

Evelyn smiled.

Wrongly.

My mother walked away from the chair and stopped beside the window.

“I don’t need it.”

Evelyn frowned.

Miriam continued.

“That is the difference between us.”

Silence.

“You spent months trying to decide who sits beside Alessia because you think proximity creates importance.”

She looked at me.

“My daughter loved me when I was a schoolteacher.”

Then back at Evelyn.

“She will love me if I never enter this room again.”

That destroyed the competition Evelyn had invented.

She had no answer for power that did not depend on a seat.

Miriam returned to me only long enough to kiss my cheek.

Then she left for dinner.

Her choice.

May you like

Nobody stopped her.

And every capo in the room watched the supposed “weak matriarch” walk away from the chair they had spent months fighting over.
