Chapter 13

Garrett moved into the old Lawson estate.

Not exile.

Distance.

He requested no crew.

Good.

For three months he disappeared from Carbone meetings entirely.

Then something unexpected happened.

Two of the captains who preferred him visited.

Not secretly.

They told me first.

I allowed it.

Miriam thought I was reckless.

I smiled.

“You raised me.”

“Exactly why I’m worried.”

Fair.

Garrett did not recruit them.

He asked what they wanted from leadership.

That interested me.

They told him the truth.

Less centralization.

More room for regional judgment.

Some of their complaints were valid.

I hated that.

Useful things often arrive through people who hurt you.

Garrett sent me no memo.

No demand.

He simply told Frank:

“Bring those arguments to Alessia yourself.”

Frank did.

I changed two policies.

Not because Garrett deserved reward.

Because the policies needed changing.

That was growth for me too.

I had become so focused on preventing inherited privilege that I sometimes treated every request from old captains as resistance.

Miriam noticed.

“You’re listening differently.”

“Yes.”

“Because Garrett?”

“Partly.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

No bitterness.

That was my mother.

Then she asked:

“Does that mean you take him back?”

I laughed.

“No.”

“Good.”

I looked at her.

“You could pretend neutrality.”

“I’m sixty-four. I don’t have time.”

Fair.

Then she became serious.

“Do not confuse his improvement with your obligation.”

I knew.

But I needed to hear it.

People can change.

That does not create a debt in the person they hurt.

Garrett’s future mattered.

Our marriage did not have to be that future.
