Chapter 11

Delia saw Lily again after eight months.
Because Lily asked.
Not because Delia had earned a schedule.
Garden.
Daylight.
Sofia present.
Me nearby.
Delia arrived without gifts.
Good.
Lily looked at her.
“You hit Mommy.”
“Yes.”
“Bad.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Delia started crying.
Sofia watched.
No rescue.
Delia answered:
“Because I was angry and jealous and I thought I had the right to boss your mommy.”
Lily frowned.
“You not boss.”
Correct.
“No.”
Then:
“Daddy boss.”
I almost intervened.
Sofia laughed.
“We’re still working on that.”
Good.
Lily asked if Delia still called Mommy maid.
“No.”
“Good.”
Then Lily wanted to show her a drawing.
Children do not require emotional symmetry.
One minute accusation.
Next minute crayons.
Delia followed.
No hug.
No forced forgiveness.
