Chapter 26 - The final motion

Eleven months after the pool party, Piper was still eight.

Celeste filed one post-trial motion challenging admission of the camera files.

Argument:

Piper had trespassed into the workshop.

The camera had been hidden for months.

Chain of custody uncertain.

Files could have been altered before forensic extraction.

The trial court held a short evidentiary hearing.

Digital examiner testified:

Original memory card received sealed.

File hashes created immediately.

Metadata internally consistent.

No evidence of post-capture editing.

Piper’s unauthorized presence did not trigger constitutional exclusion because she was a private child, not a government agent.

Trespass might affect context or credibility.

Not automatically suppress evidence.

Then Celeste argued the video clip lacked complete conversation.

True.

Seven seconds.

That was why prosecution had corroborated with:

Emails.

Job logs.

Miles.

Consignment records.

Not one magic recording.

Court denied new trial.

No appeal filed after counsel advised prospects poor.

That was the final criminal challenge.

Then the protective order remained.

Insurance closed.

Restitution paid.

Civil suit dismissed.

Licensing order final.

Juvenile diversion completed.

No unresolved institutional case.

I picked Piper up from school that afternoon.

She climbed into car.

“How was court?”

“Finished.”

“All of it?”

“The big parts.”

“Is Celeste coming to my birthday?”

Her ninth birthday was still four months away.

“No decision yet.”

She stared out window.

“Jenna can.”

“If you want.”

“I do.”

Then:

“Can Celeste someday?”

I waited.

“Maybe, if you want and it’s safe.”

Piper nodded.

No pressure to forgive.

No need to decide at eight.

Then she asked:

“Can I have Mom’s camera?”

“Not today.”

“Why?”

“Because adults just finished using it as evidence.”

“Can I use it when it’s not evidence?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

May you like

That promise felt safe.

Because by then the camera had stopped being a secret.
