Chapter 4

The audio was real.

The context was not.

Six years earlier Serafina had approved emergency payroll transfers after a union dispute threatened to shut down several construction sites.

Her words had been clipped from that meeting.

“Yes. Approve all of them.”

Someone reused the file repeatedly as supporting authorization.

Victor immediately objected.

“You can't prove who.”

“No,” Claire said.

“Not yet.”

Victor leaned back.

Power shifted again.

Enough evidence to raise questions.

Not enough to end him.

Serafina watched him carefully.

He was too calm.

Nolan was not.

Downstairs, he paced beside the windows.

His hands kept opening and closing.

When Serafina entered, he looked at her and smiled.

“You always were good at making paperwork sound dramatic.”

She stopped several feet away.

“And you always needed your father to finish your sentences.”

Nolan’s nostrils flared.

Victor entered behind her.

“Enough.”

Serafina’s eyes moved toward him.

“No.”

One word.

Victor stopped.

The capos around the room said nothing.

But every face had turned toward Serafina.

That silence was the answer Nolan had asked for on the lawn.

Why are they protecting you?

Because over the previous seven years, while Victor treated Serafina as a temporary financial caretaker, she had become the person every capo trusted to keep payroll funded, families protected and reckless decisions from destroying them.

She had never announced herself as boss.

She had simply become the person everyone called before anything important moved.

Victor finally understood what had happened beneath him.

“You've been building your own faction.”

Serafina shook her head.

“No.”

She looked around the room.

“You've been losing yours.”

Victor’s hand tightened around the back of a chair.

Then Nolan suddenly laughed.

“Ask her about Lorenzo.”

The room changed.

Serafina stared at him.

Victor turned sharply.

“Nolan.”

Too late.

Nolan’s smile widened because he had finally found something that hurt her.

“Ask your queen why Lorenzo wanted her removed from the books before he died.”

Serafina’s face emptied.

“What?”

Nolan looked at Victor.

Victor’s jaw was locked.

May you like

That was the first time Serafina knew Nolan was not bluffing.

Somewhere before Lorenzo died, her own husband had apparently made a decision about her that Victor had hidden for seven years.
