Chapter 5

The room was beneath the ballroom.

Not hidden by genius.

Hidden by habit.

A narrow door behind an old acoustic panel.

My mother used it when charity concerts ran late.

A private practice room.

Rafe found the lock.

Mariel had the key.

Helena mailed it to her two weeks before she died.

No explanation.

Only one line:

When Garrick is ready to hear both halves, come home.

Mariel never came.

Not then.

Grief.

Anger.

Fear.

Eleven years passed.

Then she read about my engagement to Odile.

Saw Beatrice’s daughter entering Ashbourne.

Old history repeated too closely.

She returned.

The practice room contained one piano.

One bench.

And a cabinet.

Inside:

Letters.

Dozens.

Helena to Mariel.

Never sent.

That hurt.

My mother wrote for twenty-eight years and mailed none of them.

I read only one at first.

Mariel,

I keep telling myself silence protects Garrick from inheriting our feud.

The truth is uglier.

Silence protects me from admitting I chose belonging over you.

I sat down.

Mariel stood beside the piano.

No tears.

Maybe she had spent them already.

The next line:

Every year I wait, telling him becomes harder, which I then use as reason to wait again.

There.

Generational secrecy in one sentence.

Then another:

If Garrick ever becomes head, I hope he destroys the idea that family unity means hiding the person who refused us.

My throat tightened.

She had wanted me to change the family.

Never told me what needed changing.

Contradiction.

Human.

Then one envelope addressed to me.

Garrick.

I held it.

Mariel said:

“She wrote that last.”

I opened it.

My mother’s handwriting shook more.

If Mariel comes back, do not make her prove she belongs.

Do not make her forgive me.

Do not turn my regret into her duty.

That was all.

No apology through me.

No instruction to restore family.

Just a boundary.

Good.

Then one final sheet fell from the envelope.

A list of names.

People who helped erase Mariel.

Most dead.

Three alive.

May you like

One was Odile’s father.

And he was sitting at my engagement dinner upstairs.
