Chapter 14

The club reopened under a different rule.

No one entered through the main lobby without seeing the broken brass emblem.

I mounted it on the wall.

Cracked.

Bent.

Dominic’s manager badge fixed beneath it.

Antonio asked if that was humiliation.

“Yes.”

But not Dominic’s.

Mine.

The plaque below it carried no long explanation.

Only:

POWER WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY ROTS.

Sofia would have mocked the drama.

I accepted that.

The club changed too.

Part of the ground floor became a neighborhood dining room during daytime hours. Not charity theater. Paid contracts with local bakeries, cafés, and vendors.

Daniel supplied bread.

He refused the first offer.

Said I was overpaying.

I told him to negotiate.

He did.

Aggressively.

I respected him more afterward.

Maeve treated the club like her personal kingdom.

She knew every guard by name within a month.

One afternoon she found the old wheelchair in storage.

“You keep?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked at it.

Because the chair reminded me of what I learned when people thought I had no power.

Because Dominic’s behavior changed the second I stood.

Because every powerful man should occasionally confront the possibility that respect aimed only upward is not respect.

“Reminder.”

She climbed into it.

Antonio nearly had a heart attack.

Maeve rolled three feet and laughed.

Daniel apologized.

I waved him off.

Then she held out both hands.

“No coins.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

“Daddy has bakery.”

“Yes.”

That sentence mattered.

Not my money.

Not my rescue.

Her father’s bakery.

Restored ownership.

The oven had been returned.

Debt erased.

Business recovering.

Daniel still struggled.

That was real life.

Restitution is not magic.

May you like

But the fear attached to my name was gone from his front door.

That mattered more than the new club furniture ever would.
