Chapter 11

Celeste turned on Sebastian first.
Not physically.
With memory.
“You asked me to make Donna feel unwelcome.”
Sebastian smiled faintly.
“Did I?”
“You told me she would poison Rocco against the marriage.”
“She probably would.”
“You told me every insult made her weaker.”
Sebastian shrugged.
“You didn't need much encouragement.”
That landed.
Celeste’s face hardened.
Rocco watched her.
She wanted to blame Sebastian for everything.
He would not let her.
“You kicked my mother.”
Celeste turned.
Rocco’s voice remained quiet.
“He didn't move your foot.”
Her lips tightened.
“He used me.”
“Yes.”
“And you still chose it.”
Silence.
Donna looked toward Celeste.
The younger woman could not meet her eyes.
Not from shame.
From anger at being cornered.
Sebastian laughed.
“There.”
“Everybody discovering personal responsibility.”
He looked at Donna.
“Your turn.”
Donna’s face tightened.
Sebastian continued.
“You gave Celeste the tunnel.”
“Told her about the bell.”
“Kept silent because you wanted your son married.”
His smile became cruel.
“You helped too.”
Donna inhaled.
Rocco’s jaw tightened.
But Donna raised one hand.
“No.”
She looked at Sebastian.
“You don't get to use the truth like poison simply because it is true.”
His eyebrows lifted.
Donna continued.
“I was wrong.”
“I should have told Rocco.”
Her voice shook.
“But I did not plan murder.”
Sebastian smiled.
“Still grading sins?”
Donna shook her head.
“No.”
“Separating them.”
That answer quieted the room.
Rocco looked at his mother.
Proud.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she refused both denial and manipulation.
Celeste scoffed.
“Wonderful.”
She crossed her arms.
“Can we stop pretending Donna is suddenly some wise saint because she found three sentences?”
Donna looked at her.
Celeste stepped closer.
“You still followed me.”
“Still touched my shoes.”
“Still stood in my way.”
Donna’s face tightened.
Celeste continued.
“And if Rocco hadn't come in?”
Her voice became low and vicious.
“You would have finished cleaning them.”
Donna looked down.
Celeste smiled.
“There.”
Rocco spoke.
“Why does that matter so much to you?”
Celeste turned.
He continued.
“You keep returning to the kneeling.”
Her expression hardened.
Rocco stepped closer.
“You needed her beneath you.”
Celeste’s lips tightened.
Donna looked up.
Rocco continued.
“Not because of the shoes.”
“Because she was the one person in this house who never treated your engagement like a coronation.”
Celeste's breathing changed.
There.
Rocco had found the wound.
Donna spoke softly.
“I welcomed you.”
Celeste looked at her.
Donna continued.
“I just never bowed.”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“That was the problem.”
Silence.
At last, honesty.
She looked toward Rocco.
“I spent years watching women like your mother control houses through motherhood.”
“Men called it respect.”
“They called it tradition.”
“They gave them influence no ring could match.”
Her eyes sharpened.
“I was not going to spend my marriage waiting for Donna Bellacorte to decide whether I was good enough.”
Donna looked at her.
“So you wanted me humiliated.”
“Yes.”
No apology.
No hesitation.
Celeste lifted her chin.
“I wanted you to understand the house was changing.”
Rocco’s voice became cold.
“It is.”
Celeste almost smiled.
Then he finished:
“Without you.”
Her face tightened.
For the first time, the sentence landed fully.
The engagement was not leverage anymore.
Not after Sebastian’s plan.
Not after her abuse.
Then Matteo entered.
“We found the external Hale crews.”
Sebastian looked up.
“Where?”
Matteo smiled faintly.
“Waiting for a wedding that isn't happening.”
May you like
Sebastian’s face hardened.
Rocco had begun dismantling the operation without firing a shot.
