Chapter 12

The family office did not survive the audit in its old form.

Too many functions were mixed together.

Household management.

Corporate reimbursement.

Personal security.

Family events.

Charity.

Informal influence.

Raffaele dissolved the centralized structure over the following three months.

Professional administrators replaced relatives.

Personal expenses moved entirely outside company systems.

Family members lost authority over household staff unless they actually lived in the residence.

Security orders required verified authorization.

Employees could challenge unusual instructions without risking their jobs.

Several relatives called the reforms humiliating.

Raffaele stopped caring.

The audit also produced financial consequences.

Delia had approved tens of thousands of dollars in family-event expenses through legitimate hospitality subsidiaries.

Some were sloppy accounting.

Some were improper.

Repayment agreements followed.

Two managers lost their jobs for knowingly processing false classifications.

A tax review resulted in amended filings and penalties.

Raffaele did not hide them.

The price was significant.

So was the relief.

For the first time, he knew where family ended and business began.

Delia’s misuse of internal systems resulted in civil claims and a negotiated resolution that included repayment, permanent loss of administrative access, and written restrictions on contacting employees connected to the investigation.

Authorities reviewed whether any conduct justified criminal charges.

Raffaele did not demand an outcome they could not support.

Evidence determined consequences.

Not his anger.

That was new too.

The harder part was Sofia.

Her hands healed.

Their marriage did not heal at the same speed.

She began seeing a therapist alone.

Eventually she agreed to marriage counseling.

The first session went badly.

Raffaele explained Delia’s deception.

Sofia listened.

Then said:

“You keep talking like proving you didn’t send those messages clears you.”

Raffaele stared at her.

“It matters.”

“It does.”

“Then what am I missing?”

Sofia looked at the therapist before answering.

“Delia lied because she knew I would believe it.”

Raffaele went quiet.

“She knew staff would believe it.”

“Yes.”

“She knew your security people would believe it.”

“Yes.”

“She knew everyone in your house could imagine you ordering your wife not to interrupt a meeting while your sister humiliated her.”

Raffaele felt the words land one by one.

Sofia continued.

“You didn’t order me into that kitchen.”

Her eyes filled.

“But you built a life where your name could be used like a locked door.”

Raffaele did not defend himself.

The therapist waited.

Finally he said:

“You’re right.”

Sofia wiped her cheek.

“That doesn’t fix it.”

May you like

“I know.”

For the first time, she believed that he knew.
