Chapter 7

Brenna rejected the settlement.

Rachel supported the decision for one reason.

Sybil’s proposed agreement required confidentiality.

No discussion of the forged report.

No disclosure of the arrangement to family members.

No civil claim involving the fake test.

No further inquiry into who created it.

Brenna read the draft once.

“She isn’t apologizing.”

“No.”

“She’s buying silence.”

“Yes.”

Gavin asked the harder question.

“What if the independent test says Owen is mine anyway?”

Brenna looked at him.

“Then we deal with that truth separately.”

That answer mattered.

Sybil’s conduct did not become acceptable if the biological result happened to support the lie.

A forged test remained forged.

Tobin remained displaced.

Owen remained manipulated.

Two days later Rachel received records from Sybil’s family-law attorney after the firm withdrew from representing her due to questions surrounding documents she had supplied.

The attorney had drafts.

Not filed.

Not signed.

But revealing.

Sybil had been preparing household plans for Owen before the first supposed test was complete.

Bedroom placement.

School district.

Transportation.

Nanny schedule.

Emergency contacts.

One line stood out.

Tobin relocated to east guest suite during integration period.

Brenna read it.

“He’s three.”

Rachel nodded.

“He was being described like furniture.”

Then Gavin noticed something else.

The earliest draft was dated eighteen days before Marissa agreed to any testing at all.

Gavin stared at the page.

“She already planned Owen moving in.”

“Yes.”

“Before Marissa even said yes.”

“Yes.”

He looked sick.

The third clue was now impossible to ignore.

Sybil had behaved as if biology was irrelevant long before anyone else thought biology had been established.

First, she controlled every part of the testing process.

Second, she contacted Marissa rather than the other way around.

Third, she prepared the household transition before the test even happened.

Brenna’s suspicion hardened into something more specific.

May you like

Sybil had not been trying to discover whether Gavin had another son.

She had been constructing a situation in which everyone would behave as though he did.
