Chapter 14

The legal cases took months.
Agatha accepted a plea that reflected her role in deliberately endangering Elliot and participating in the corporate scheme surrounding Conrad’s anticipated reaction.
Julian entered a separate agreement.
His cooperation mattered.
So did his participation.
Neither received the disappearance Bellafonte enemies sometimes received in older generations.
Conrad refused that kind of justice.
Courts created records.
Records lasted.
Agatha lost every family-governance position.
Julian lost corporate authority and operational rank.
The senior capos complained privately that Conrad had allowed the family name to be dragged through public proceedings.
Conrad answered only once.
“My son’s name was already dragged through a garden.”
Nobody raised the subject again.
The independent board review cleared Conrad to resume the chairmanship.
He returned under new governance rules that limited even his own emergency authority.
Rachel expected him to resist.
He did not.
“If a rule only protects us when good people are in charge, it isn’t a very good rule.”
She smiled.
“You’re becoming annoyingly governable.”
“Don’t tell anyone.”
Elliot improved too.
Not instantly.
For weeks, he became nervous when his monitor chirped.
He refused to sit near the garden column even after the chain anchor disappeared.
He became upset if a water glass was moved beyond his reach.
Dr. Price advised everyone not to force the issue.
So nobody did.
Water remained where Elliot could reach it.
Adults asked before touching his monitor.
The garden became optional.
Then one afternoon, Elliot walked outside by himself while Conrad watched from the terrace.
He stopped near the repaired column.
Conrad’s body tensed.
Elliot looked at the stone.
Then at his father.
“Chain gone.”
“Yes.”
Elliot walked closer.
He touched the repaired patch with one finger.
Then he ran toward the fountain because something more interesting had caught his attention.
Conrad stayed where he was.

That was enough.
Healing did not need a speech every time it happened.
