Chapter 5

Elliot asked for his mother’s things back.
All of them.
Rocco did not promise immediately.
Some objects had already entered museum records, and ownership needed to be documented properly.
Four-year-olds did not understand accession procedures.
They understood whether adults listened.
So Rocco took him to the collection room.
Helen placed Celeste’s music box on a padded table.
Elliot touched it gently.
“Mommy sings?”
“It plays music.”
“No.”
Elliot shook his head.
“Mommy sings with it.”
Rocco remembered.
Celeste used to hum whenever the mechanism played.
For the first time in almost two years, he let the memory exist without trying to end it quickly.
Then Elliot pointed toward two dolls.
“Mason can play?”
Rocco looked at him.
“If Mason wants and you're okay with it.”
Elliot nodded.
Again, the child had no interest in the ownership war adults created around him.
Later Mason asked to speak with Rocco.
Victoria initially objected.
Rocco insisted she could remain present.
Mason sat on the edge of a museum bench.
“Mom says Aunt Celeste didn't want us here.”
Victoria stiffened.
Rocco looked at her.
Mason continued.
“She says this was supposed to be her museum.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Mason.”
“But you said it.”
Rocco turned toward his cousin.
“What exactly have you been telling him?”
Victoria looked furious.
Then embarrassed.
She admitted she believed Celeste had prevented her from having a larger role.
After Celeste died, Victoria considered taking control of more of the museum justified.
“She had everything.”
Rocco stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
“You.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“The museum. The donors. Everyone adored her. Even after she died, every room still had her name.”
Rocco finally saw the emotional wound underneath the financial decisions.
Victoria had been competing with a dead woman.
Then using the museum to win a competition Celeste was no longer alive to participate in.
But the memorandum still bothered him.
Celeste could be direct.
She could be stubborn.
She could dislike someone’s management style.
Rocco still could not imagine her writing those words about Victoria.
He asked the museum archivist to search Celeste’s original correspondence.
