Chapter 18

Celina denied leaking the video.
She admitted something almost as bad.
She had given the documentary producer an unedited archival copy three weeks earlier.
“I believed the Circle had permission.”
“You signed the original banquet archive agreement,” Katherine said. “You knew foundation approval was required.”
Celina sat across the conference table.
“I believed Lucille still controlled that authorization when the copy was made.”
“The copy was made last month.”
Silence.
Katherine continued.
“Lucille has not controlled the foundation for nearly a year.”
Celina looked toward Rafael.
“I did not post it.”
“Who did you give it to?”
“Peter Sloan.”
The communications consultant hired by the Heritage Circle.
“Did you tell him Emmett’s image could not be released?”
“Yes.”
“In writing?”
“No.”
Rafael leaned back.
Celina saw his expression.
“I know how this looks.”
“No,” he said. “You know how you want it to look.”
She flinched.
Rafael continued.
“You were part of the first plan because you believed hurting my son for fifteen minutes could buy you thirty days of authority.”
“Yes.”
“Then you gave strangers the recording of those fifteen minutes.”
“I thought the documentary would include context.”
“What context makes his humiliation yours to distribute?”
Celina had no answer.
That mattered.
She had changed careers.
Repaid unsupported expenses.
Accepted the board investigation.
Publicly acknowledged her role in scheduling the banquet trap.
But one belief had survived everything.
The family story still belonged to the family adults.
Emmett was part of it.
Therefore his pain could still become material if the adults considered the purpose legitimate.
Rafael stood.
Celina spoke quickly.
“I did not know they would publish it.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised everyone.
Rafael meant it.
Believing her did not solve the problem.
Katherine issued preservation notices to Celina, Peter Sloan, Vittorio, and the Heritage Circle.
Marcus traced the upload through an agency server.
The account belonged to a junior editor working for Sloan.
The editor claimed he posted the clip after receiving instructions to build “interest” before the documentary announcement.
The instruction came from Sloan.
Sloan said Vittorio approved the campaign.
Vittorio’s attorney denied it.
Then the emails arrived.
VITTORIO: People need to remember what Rafael destroyed.
SLOAN: The child clip will move.
VITTORIO: Use enough to establish cause. Do not show the boy crying.
SLOAN: Understood.
Rafael read the line again.
Do not show the boy crying.
As though hiding tears made using the humiliation respectful.
The Heritage Circle suspended Vittorio pending internal review.
It was voluntary.
Its board included many of his friends.
Rafael expected a performance.
Instead, two younger relatives resigned from the Circle entirely.
Then four more.
One sent Rafael a message.
I joined because my grandmother said it was history. I didn’t join to make Emmett content.
The old system had defenders.
It did not have every descendant.
That distinction mattered.
The legal problem was straightforward enough.
Unauthorized publication.
Child privacy.
Contract violations.
Potential commercial appropriation depending on how the documentary was marketed.
Katherine handled it.
Rafael’s problem was harder.
Emmett stopped baking.
Not dramatically.
He simply began choosing other activities.
Trucks.
Painting.
A puzzle Theo hated because it had two hundred nearly identical blue pieces.
Nobody mentioned blackberries.
Dr. Pierce recommended the same approach as before.
Do not force the memory away.
Do not make recovery another task Emmett has to complete for adults.
One evening Rafael found him under the kitchen table.
Not hiding.
Playing.
A toy truck moved through chair legs.
Rafael sat on the floor.
Emmett looked up.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is Lucille on phone?”
“No.”
“Celina?”
“No.”
“Bad video people?”
“No.”
The categories made sense to him.
Rafael waited.
Emmett pushed the truck toward him.
“Were they laughing?”
“Some people online?”
Emmett nodded.
“Some were.”
“Why?”
“Because people sometimes laugh when they don’t understand they are watching someone get hurt.”
Emmett thought.
“Like family did?”
Rafael’s chest tightened.
“Yes.”
“Are online family?”
“No.”
“Good.”
He returned to the truck.
Children created strange borders around fear.
Rafael let him.
The next morning another envelope arrived through Katherine.
Lucille’s handwriting again.
May you like
Inside was one sentence.
If Vittorio wants history, I will give him mine.
