Chapter 3

Enzo did look.

That was what hurt.

After Luca vanished, Enzo spent seven months hunting.

Bars.

Safe houses.

Mountain properties.

Old allies.

Men connected to the rival Castellis, who supposedly bought the stolen route.

Enzo broke alliances over questions.

He nearly started another war.

Then his father, Carmine Caradonna, sat him down one night and said:

“Your brother chose his side.”

Enzo refused to accept it.

Carmine showed him Luca’s ring.

The same ring now sitting on Helena’s passenger seat.

“He mailed this back,” Carmine had said.

Enzo stared at the ring for an hour.

Then stopped searching.

Nineteen years later, he understood the problem.

If Carmine had Luca’s ring then, how had it ended inside the hidden compartment now?

Either someone recovered it after Carmine’s death.

Or Carmine had lied about how he received it.

Probably both.

Enzo removed the magnetic tape.

Old microcassette.

One of the estate storage rooms still contained equipment from Carmine’s era.

Enzo found a player.

Before listening, he summoned Helena back inside.

Not to the council room.

The garage.

She entered between two guards.

Rainwater darkened the hem of her trousers.

Her face was composed again.

Enzo placed Luca’s ring on the hood.

Helena stopped.

There was no point lying about fear now.

“Where did you get the car?”

She looked toward Maria.

“Was it her?”

“Answer.”

Helena’s eyes hardened.

“It was delivered.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“By who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try again.”

“A transport truck came after midnight.”

“No name?”

“The driver said the debt was finally being returned.”

“What debt?”

“I didn’t know.”

“You kept a mystery car that arrived after midnight?”

Helena laughed bitterly.

“In this family, that barely qualifies as unusual.”

Enzo did not smile.

“Did you recognize it?”

“Not immediately.”

“Then?”

“The mark.”

“The lion.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Why not tell me?”

She looked at him.

“Because I knew whose car it was.”

“Luca.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew more.”

Silence.

Enzo picked up the ring.

“My father showed me this nineteen years ago.”

Helena’s face changed.

“He had it?”

“Yes.”

“He told me Luca sent it.”

Helena looked away.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Helena.”

She closed her eyes.

“Luca didn’t send that ring.”

Enzo’s anger became very quiet.

“How do you know?”

“Because I took it off his hand.”

Silence.

Maria, standing near the interior doorway, went still.

Enzo did not move.

“When?”

“The night he disappeared.”

There it was.

Nineteen years collapsing into one sentence.

“Were you there?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Helena’s voice lowered.

“North Orchard.”

Enzo knew the property.

An old Caradonna vineyard and storage house abandoned after a winter fire seventeen years ago.

“What happened?”

“I’m not telling you here.”

Enzo almost laughed.

“You starved my son because he scratched a car hiding my brother’s ring.”

“I did not starve him because of Luca.”

“Then why?”

Helena’s face hardened.

“He kept lying about the key.”

“He’s three.”

“He knew where it was.”

“He was frightened.”

“So was I.”

Enzo stepped closer.

“Do not put your fear beside his.”

She flinched.

Good.

“You took food from a child.”

“Yes.”

“You dressed him in rags.”

“Yes.”

“You made him kneel beside a car.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Helena’s composure cracked.

“Because for one minute I wanted a Caradonna son to understand what it feels like when this family decides you are worth less than its property.”

The words surprised Enzo.

Not because they excused anything.

Because they were honest.

“You punished Leo for something done to you.”

Helena’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“And you call yourself family.”

She looked away.

Enzo turned on the old cassette player.

Static filled the garage.

Then Luca’s voice.

Young.

Exhausted.

“Enzo.”

The room froze.

“If you ever hear this, I need you to understand something before anger makes you stupid.”

Enzo almost laughed.

That sounded exactly like his brother.

The recording continued.

“You did not betray me.”

Helena looked down.

“Father did.”

Enzo’s face emptied.

“But he wasn’t alone.”

Static.

“I’m leaving the ring with Helena. If she gives it to you, she finally found courage.”

Helena began crying silently.

“If she doesn’t…”

A bitter laugh.

“…then I was right about her too.”

The tape clicked.

Then Luca’s final sentence:

“Ask her who drove me to North Orchard.”

Enzo turned toward Helena.

May you like

She did not wait for the question.

“My father.”
