Chapter 11

Peter did not choose.

That was the first crack.

Matteo looked at him.

“Your son or your boss.”

Andrew struggled.

“Dad, don’t.”

Peter’s hand shook.

Vincent said:

“Peter.”

Matteo smiled.

“Quiet.”

Vincent ignored him.

“Look at me.”

Peter did.

“Your son.”

Peter’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You choose him.”

Matteo’s smile widened.

Then Vincent continued:

“And that doesn’t mean you betray me.”

Matteo’s expression changed.

Peter stared.

Vincent said:

“The choice is false.”

Andrew looked toward him.

Matteo laughed.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because I’m not asking Peter to sacrifice his son for me.”

Silence.

Matteo’s structure depended on hierarchy.

Boss above child.

Family above individual.

Loyalty measured through loss.

Vincent refused the scale.

“Let Andrew go.”

Matteo looked amused.

“No.”

“Then this isn’t Peter’s choice.”

Vincent’s voice lowered.

“It’s yours.”

The old man’s face hardened.

Gabriel watched.

Something shifted in him.

Matteo noticed.

“Don’t.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You told me Vincent would make Peter choose.”

“He will.”

“No.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“He just didn’t.”

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

Vincent stared at Sofia’s brother.

“You were there the night Sofia died.”

Gabriel’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“Who killed her?”

Matteo smiled.

“Later.”

Vincent ignored him.

“Gabriel.”

His brother-in-law looked toward Matteo.

Then back.

“I did.”

The theater went silent.

Vincent felt the floor disappear.

Gabriel continued quickly:

“Not intentionally.”

Vincent’s hand moved.

Dominic stepped slightly between him and the stage.

Not protecting Gabriel.

Protecting the truth.

Vincent stopped.

“What happened?”

Gabriel’s voice broke.

“Sofia called me.”

“After Dominic left her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She knew I was working with Matteo.”

“Why were you?”

“To find Nico.”

“For?”

“Matteo told me Nico knew who killed our father.”

Vincent frowned.

Sofia and Gabriel’s father had died years earlier in another old family conflict.

Another grievance weaponized.

Gabriel continued.

“I believed him.”

“What happened on the ridge?”

“I met Sofia.”

“In her car.”

“Yes.”

“She confronted you.”

“Yes.”

“She told me Matteo was using me.”

“Was he?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked toward the floor.

“We argued.”

“Then?”

“She said she was taking Leo away for one night until she could tell you everything safely.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“Where?”

“Nico’s place.”

“So Matteo lied to Dominic using part of the truth.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to the car?”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“I tried to take the keys.”

“Why?”

“I thought she was panicking.”

“You grabbed her.”

“Yes.”

“She fought.”

“Yes.”

“Car moved.”

Gabriel’s face crumpled.

“We were on the shoulder.”

Vincent felt sick.

“I knocked the gear.”

“The car rolled.”

“Yes.”

“Over the edge.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I jumped out.”

“Sofia?”

“I tried.”

His voice broke.

“I grabbed her hand.”

Vincent stared.

“I lost it.”

Silence.

No mastermind pushing the car.

No elegant murder.

A brother deceived.

A sister fighting.

A terrible moment.

Matteo had created conditions.

Gabriel made the physical mistake.

Both truths could exist.

Vincent’s revenge instinct wanted one target.

Reality gave him layers.

“Why fake your death before?”

Gabriel looked at Matteo.

“To get close.”

“Why not tell Sofia?”

“She knew eventually.”

“Me?”

“I thought you’d kill me before I reached Matteo.”

Vincent almost laughed.

Probably true then.

Maybe still.

Matteo interrupted.

“Enough confession.”

Gabriel turned.

“No.”

Matteo’s eyes hardened.

Gabriel took something from his pocket.

A silver whistle.

Emma had its twin.

He blew three notes.

Sharp.

Clear.

Somewhere backstage, movement stopped.

One of Matteo’s men lowered his weapon.

Then another.

The old signal.

Turn.

Matteo stared.

“You.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“Sofia was right.”

Matteo’s face hardened with something like grief.

“You all leave.”

“No.”

May you like

Gabriel’s voice became quiet.

“We stop.”
