Chapter 9

Mauro expected the capos to hesitate.

They didn't.

That surprised him.

Good.

He looked at Anthony.

“You think Salvatore's going to protect this family by turning it into a nursery?”

Anthony answered:

“No.”

Mauro smiled.

Then Anthony continued.

“But I know you invited armed men into a room where his grandson was eating birthday cake.”

Mauro's smile disappeared.

Victor DeLuca stepped forward.

“And you called beating his daughter discipline.”

Another man removed his capo pin.

Placed it on the table.

Not surrendering it to me.

Offering it back if this was what leadership required.

“If that's the old way,” he said, “keep it.”

Mauro stared.

His plan had depended on one assumption.

That men respected cruelty more than restraint.

Sometimes they do.

Until cruelty arrives at their own table.

I looked at Daniel.

He had become very quiet.

No smirking now.

No jokes about Claire crying.

I walked toward him.

“When was the first time you hit her?”

He looked away.

“Does it matter?”

Claire answered.

“Yes.”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“There she is.”

He looked at her.

“Daddy's in the room, so suddenly you have a voice.”

Claire didn't flinch this time.

Daniel noticed.

His expression sharpened.

“Don't get brave now.”

I stepped aside.

Not away.

Just enough that he could see her clearly.

Claire looked at him.

“You always said that.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Because you confuse defiance with courage.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You confused fear with obedience.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who fed you?”

Claire almost smiled.

“You withheld food.”

“Who gave you that house?”

“You locked me inside it.”

“Who paid for everything Leo had?”

“You punished him with it.”

Daniel's face reddened.

“You ungrateful—”

I raised one finger.

He stopped.

Not because he respected Claire.

Because he feared me.

That difference told my daughter everything.

She looked at him.

Then at me.

“I don't want Leo growing up thinking this is how men speak to women.”

Daniel laughed.

“You think you're leaving?”

Claire stared at him.

“You still think that's your decision.”

His face changed.

Finally.

The room shifted.

Not because I ordered anything.

Because Claire had stopped asking.

I turned toward Preston.

“You grabbed Leo when I entered.”

He said nothing.

“Why?”

“To get him away from the fight.”

Leo shouted from beside Claire:

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

Preston's jaw tightened.

Leo pointed.

“Uncle said if Grandpa comes, we go fast.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Preston looked trapped.

I walked closer.

“You planned to remove him the moment I discovered Daniel.”

Silence.

“So he couldn't talk.”

Preston finally snapped:

“He's three.”

There it was again.

The belief that children are small enough to be irrelevant.

I smiled.

“And he destroyed your entire plan.”

Preston stared at Leo.

Hatred.

My bodyguard stepped between them immediately.

Then Mauro laughed.

One last attempt to control the room.

“Do you really think this ends with them?”

I turned.

“What?”

His smile returned.

“You caught the museum team.”

“Yes.”

“You found the transmitter.”

“Yes.”

“You know about the freight entrance.”

“Yes.”

Mauro leaned closer.

“But you still don't know why I needed you inside the council room at exactly eight.”

The room went quiet.

I stared at him.

Then remembered.

The council room.

Not the gallery.

Not the freight entrance.

The room itself.

I turned toward the long table.

My chair.

Mauro's eyes moved toward it.

Too late.

I walked over.

Pulled the chair back.

Nothing.

Then Anthony crouched.

Reached beneath the table.

His fingers found a small metal housing fixed directly under my seat.

Not a transmitter.

A mechanical trigger.

My pulse slowed.

Mauro stopped smiling.

I looked at him.

“What does it trigger?”

No answer.

Anthony followed the thin wire into the wall.

Toward the old museum ventilation system.

Then he stopped.

His face went pale.

“Salvatore.”

“What?”

He looked at the decorative fossil wall behind my chair.

“Gas line.”

Nobody moved.

Not poison gas.

Museum preservation gas.

Used in sealed specimen rooms.

Harmless in controlled quantities.

Dangerous in an enclosed room if released quickly enough.

Mauro hadn't just planned for armed men.

May you like

He had built a second way to kill everyone at my council table.

And Daniel's violence had accidentally pulled me out of the room before it happened.
