Chapter 13

Dominic expected confusion.

He got silence.

That frightened him more.

I looked at him.

“Who told you?”

Victor spoke quickly.

“Don’t.”

Dominic glanced at him.

Mistake.

I nodded.

“Thank you.”

His shoulders dropped.

Mercer smiled.

“Victor never could stop talking with his eyes.”

Dominic looked at Mercer.

“You promised.”

Mercer laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that tonight.”

I almost admired the efficiency.

One predator.

Three families of fools.

Dominic turned to me.

“I didn’t betray you.”

I looked around the room.

“You entered my house expecting me removed.”

“I expected a transition.”

“Into what?”

“Stability.”

There was the word.

Victor had discipline.

Natalie had options.

Mercer had opportunity.

Dominic had stability.

Everyone renamed betrayal to make themselves comfortable.

I looked at him.

“What did I do that required replacing?”

“You became distracted.”

“With?”

“Home.”

He glanced at Lily.

I followed his eyes.

“You mean my daughter.”

Dominic sighed.

“You canceled two meetings because she was sick.”

“She had pneumonia.”

“Exactly.”

The coldness shocked even Ethan.

Dominic continued.

“You stopped acting like your father.”

“Good.”

His jaw tightened.

“You used to understand sacrifice.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“I understand sacrifice perfectly.”

I pointed toward Lily.

“I simply stopped sacrificing the wrong people.”

Silence.

Mercer smiled faintly.

“That line will play well with the loyalists.”

I looked at him.

“You think this is still a campaign.”

“It’s always a campaign.”

“No.”

I held up Ethan’s phone.

“This is a family birthday with a full recording of every person who tried to turn a child into bait.”

His smile faded.

I continued.

“You wanted thirty seconds of me losing control.”

Pause.

“You got hours of them explaining why.”

Victor’s face changed.

Natalie whispered:

“Sebastian…”

I looked at my captain.

“Send the full stream to every Whitmore capo.”

No editing.

No speech.

No framing.

Just truth.

Victor shouted:

“No.”

Mercer moved for the first time.

Not toward me.

Toward the phone.

My guards raised weapons.

He stopped.

That was when I knew.

The recording mattered more than the house.

May you like

Because once every Whitmore man heard Victor call Lily leverage, Dominic call her a distraction, and Natalie call her my past—

their plan could never be rebuilt with a cleaner story.
