Chapter 15

Months passed.
The Romano estate changed.
The council room beside the breakfast room was converted into a library and playroom.
Business meetings moved elsewhere.
Lucy’s meals became ordinary again.
No staff member needed permission from family to report concerns about her.
Emma remained in the house, but not as an invisible servant.
Vittorio offered her a formal household-management role.
She accepted only after negotiating her own terms.
That made him smile.
Barely.
Marcus’s financial and business cases continued.
Some matters were resolved quickly.
Others were not.
He remained outside the Romano organization permanently.
Bianca entered counseling and faced the consequences of abusing Lucy and participating in the destruction of Elena’s recorder.
She never returned to the estate.
Vittorio did not contact her.
His own violence from the breakfast-room confrontation was reviewed separately.
He accepted the legal consequences advised through counsel rather than using family influence to make them disappear.
That mattered to him now.
Not because it made him innocent.
Because Lucy would eventually learn what happened.
He wanted the truth to survive even when it embarrassed him.
One morning, almost a year after the dog bowl, Vittorio made breakfast himself.
Badly.
Lucy sat at the table watching him burn toast.
She wrinkled her nose.
“Daddy.”
“Yes?”
“It smells bad.”
Vittorio looked at the blackened bread.
“That’s because Daddy has many talents.”
Lucy waited.
“Cooking isn't one.”
She laughed.
The sound filled the room.
Vittorio put fresh toast on her plate.
Then Lucy looked toward the floor.
The pet feeding mat was still there.
A new dog slept beside it now.
For months Vittorio had considered removing the mat.
He left it.
Not as a memorial to Bianca’s cruelty.
As proof the room belonged to Lucy again.
Lucy tore a corner from her toast and reached down.
“No feeding him from the table.”
She pulled her hand back.
“Why?”
“Because he'll become spoiled.”
She looked offended.
“Like me?”
Vittorio froze.
Lucy smiled.
She had been joking.
He laughed quietly and sat beside her.
After breakfast, she ran upstairs.
Vittorio remained alone.
Elena’s final letter rested inside the drawer beside him.
He still had not answered one question.
Would Elena have forgiven him?
He no longer tried to invent the answer.
Then Emma entered carrying the morning mail.
“One came without a return address.”
Vittorio looked up.
She handed him a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Old.
Elena standing beside Lucy’s stroller.
On the back, in Elena’s handwriting:
If he finally listens, give him this.
Vittorio looked at Emma.
Her face had gone completely still.
“I’ve never seen that before.”
Neither had he.
Under the photograph was a tiny brass key.
No note explaining what it opened.
Lucy called from upstairs.
“Daddy!”
Vittorio closed his hand around the key.
Then stood.

Whatever Elena had left behind could wait five more minutes.
His daughter could not.
