Chapter 11

Once the truth about Luca became known inside the family, the argument changed.

Some relatives immediately softened toward Tamsin.

Orson did not object to compassion.

He objected when compassion turned into erasure.

“She lost her son,” one cousin told him.

“Yes.”

“She’s traumatized.”

“Yes.”

“So you understand why Mara triggered her.”

“Yes.”

The cousin waited.

Orson did not continue.

“That’s it?”

“That explains the behavior.”

He looked directly at him.

“It does not excuse throwing medication away from a three-year-old who was struggling to breathe.”

That distinction became the line Orson refused to cross.

Tamsin entered intensive therapy through her attorney’s recommendation.

Not as a substitute for legal consequences.

As something she should have done thirteen years earlier.

She also agreed to a protective order keeping her away from Mara.

No private calls.

No gifts delivered through relatives.

No family members carrying messages.

The criminal investigation of the dinner continued.

So did the review of Orson’s slap.

Elena warned him that the outcome could be uncomfortable.

“Good.”

She frowned.

“That is not how clients usually answer.”

“I’m trying something new.”

“What?”

“Not assuming discomfort means injustice.”

Elena almost smiled.

The family security structure was changed too.

Bodyguards were instructed that medical decisions involving Mara came from her doctors and designated caregivers.

Not senior relatives.

Not capos.

Not Orson’s cousins.

Not even Orson if a licensed professional was handling an emergency and required room to work.

That last rule was his idea.

Power had almost failed his daughter because everyone inside the estate assumed the most important person in a room should make every decision.

Sometimes the most useful person in the room was simply the one who knew what to do.
