Chapter 15

Six months later, Angelo still used the wheelchair.

That did not change.

Some things did not resolve because the story needed them to.

He learned new ways to fight.

New ways to enter rooms.

New ways to make men stand without standing himself.

The old underground council chamber remained sealed.

He never reopened it.

Meetings took place in a bright room beside the recovery garden instead.

No throne-like chair at the head.

Angelo’s wheelchair fit naturally at the table.

Dominic returned to the estate twice during those months.

Never as capo.

Never with an entourage.

He worked under Mateo’s supervision handling low-level territory disputes.

He hated it.

Made sure everyone knew.

His arrogance remained intact.

So did his punishment.

Helena lived at a separate Carbone property outside Boston.

She sent no apology.

Only one message to Angelo:

You’ll learn that mercy creates bigger enemies than fear.

Angelo did not answer.

Victor disappeared again.

Not secretly.

He simply left.

Before leaving, he told Angelo one thing.

“Your father wanted you feared.”

Angelo waited.

Victor looked toward Noah playing with wooden blocks on the floor.

“You may want something harder.”

“What?”

“To be trusted.”

Then he left.

Emma no longer worked as a maid.

Angelo offered her money.

She refused.

A house.

Refused.

A senior household position.

She stared at him.

“Do you always solve gratitude by trying to own the solution?”

Angelo’s mouth almost curved.

“Apparently.”

She accepted one thing.

A paid administrative role overseeing staff welfare and internal household safety.

Not because Angelo rescued her.

Because she insisted on choosing the terms herself.

Noah began preschool.

The defensive reflex faded slowly.

Not magically.

At first any raised male voice made him duck.

Then only shouting nearby.

Then only sudden hands.

Eventually, one afternoon, Dominic visited while Noah was drawing at the garden table.

Dominic walked past.

Noah looked up.

Did not cover his head.

Dominic stopped.

His jaw tightened.

Noah returned to the drawing.

Nothing dramatic happened.

For Dominic, that was worse than punishment.

He had become irrelevant to the child’s fear.

That evening Angelo ate dinner in the recovery garden.

Not alone.

Emma sat across from him reviewing household schedules.

Noah built a tower from therapy blocks nearby.

Angelo reached for his water.

Then stopped.

A blue glass bottle sat beside the pitcher.

His entire body became still.

Emma saw it.

She immediately stood.

“Where did that come from?”

Angelo’s hand tightened around the wheel.

Noah looked over.

Then laughed.

“Mine.”

Both adults stared.

The boy ran over.

He grabbed the bottle.

Inside were blue glass marbles.

Preschool craft pieces.

Emma exhaled.

Angelo closed his eyes.

Then laughed.

Quietly.

The first time the color blue had entered the room without becoming a threat.

Noah held one marble toward him.

“Pretty.”

Angelo took it.

“Very.”

Noah returned to his blocks.

Emma sat again.

For a while, neither adult spoke.

Then she looked at him.

“You know he likes you.”

Angelo stared at the marble in his palm.

“I know.”

“He asks if you’ll come to his school picnic.”

Angelo’s eyebrows lifted.

“Is that an order?”

Emma smiled faintly.

“No.”

“That’s why I'm asking.”

Angelo looked toward Noah.

The boy was lining up blocks beside the wheelchair.

One for himself.

One for Emma.

One beside Angelo.

Three.

A small family arrangement made by a child who did not understand how complicated adults liked to make belonging.

Angelo looked back at Emma.

“Do you want me there?”

She hesitated.

That mattered.

Then:

“Yes.”

Not romance.

Not a promise.

Not yet.

Trust.

The first piece.

Angelo nodded.

“I’ll come.”

From across the garden, Noah raised his head.

“No scary men?”

Emma looked at Angelo.

He looked back at the boy.

“No scary men.”

Noah thought about that.

Then pointed at Angelo.

“You scary.”

Emma covered a laugh.

Angelo raised an eyebrow.

“Am I?”

Noah nodded seriously.

“But nice scary.”

Angelo laughed.

This time louder.

May you like

The sound carried across the estate.

And for the first time since the ambush, nobody mistook it for weakness.
