Chapter 15

The captains were already on their way.

Alistair had invited them using my engagement dinner as cover.

He expected to enter Ashford command before midnight.

I let them come.

Celeste stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted an audience.”

Alistair smiled.

“Finally.”

“No.”

I looked at Nora.

“Now he gets the correct story.”

Nine senior Ashford men entered the music hall.

They saw Marcus bruised.

Celeste standing without her ring.

Mae beside Nora.

Alistair still upright, pretending control had not left him.

He spoke first.

“Nolan has had an emotional evening.”

I almost laughed.

Predictable.

“He discovered a private indiscretion.”

Private.

Indiscretion.

Four years of coercion reduced to vocabulary.

One captain looked at me.

“Boss?”

I handed him the ring.

He read the engraving.

Then looked at Mae.

I told them everything.

Manhattan.

Mae’s pregnancy.

Nora.

The threats.

The surveillance.

The engagement plan.

No embellishment.

I didn’t need it.

Alistair interrupted:

“This is domestic chaos.”

One captain stared at him.

“You arranged an attack on our boss.”

“To protect an alliance.”

Another looked at Nora.

“You hid his child.”

“For stability.”

Another:

“You used staff to block Mae from him.”

“Necessary.”

Every answer made him smaller.

Then Celeste spoke.

“My father wanted this marriage because Evelyn Ashford rejected his family.”

Alistair turned.

“Be quiet.”

She didn’t.

“He made me wear Mae’s ring because he called it victory.”

The room went silent.

Marcus added:

“He planned to use the marriage to enter command.”

Alistair’s face twisted.

“Traitors.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

Pause.

“Students.”

He frowned.

“You taught them relationships are tools.”

Celeste looked down.

Marcus too.

I continued.

“They finally learned what happens when the tool realizes it is disposable.”

One by one, the Ashford captains turned away from Alistair.

No vote.

No ceremony.

Mafia power rarely needs either.

Just men deciding whose voice they answer.

Alistair raised his cane.

“You ungrateful—”

May you like

Not one man moved.

For the first time in decades, a Wainwright command died in the room before reaching anyone.
